La giovane studentessa universitaria di medicina Nancy ha scelto per le sue vacanze un luogo dell'anima, un'incantevole e solitaria spiaggia messicana dove sua mamma, morta di recente, amava andare anche quando era incinta di lei. L'amica che doveva accompagnarla le dà buca, rimanendo, ubriaca dopo una notte brava, in albergo. Un locale, Carlos, le dà un passaggio sin lì, ma poi lei rimane sola con la sua tavola da surf. Incontra un paio di surfisti e si diverte a cavalcare le onde con loro per un po'. Poi, mentre sta per calare la sera, loro se ne vanno e Nancy resta del tutto da sola. In acqua, delfini l'affiancano giocosi. Poi, più al largo, scorge un cetaceo morto dilaniato e subito si fa vivo chi l'ha ucciso: un grande squalo bianco. Nancy si ritrova così a combattere per la vita nelle acque basse vicino alla riva, trovando prima precario rifugio sul cadavere del cetaceo e poi su una roccia affiorante, con la riva (e la salvezza) a una distanza breve ma apparentemente incolmabile, a causa dello squalo che implacabile pattuglia le acque in attesa della sua preda.  Dai tempi del capostipite Lo squalo di Steven Spielberg, i cosiddetti squalo-movies sono stati così numerosi da creare un vero e proprio sottogenere dell'horror, popolato per lo più da film noiosissimi e ripetitivi alternati a qualche autentica stranezza non necessariamente brillante (come gli Sharknado). Ci sono però delle eccezioni, film che recuperano la verità e la durezza della lotta tra l'essere umano e la natura facendone un'avvincente metafora del rapporto tra la civiltà e l'elemento primordiale incarnato da un animale potente e inesorabile nel perseguimento dei suoi fini. Paradise Beach - Dentro l'incubo, come già qualche anno fa Open Water, è una di queste eccezioni.  Horror di situazione, come appunto era anche Open Water, il film mette di fronte la protagonista con l'imperscrutabile forza della natura ostile rappresentata dallo squalo. E la situazione è presentata in modo interessante, credibile, con qualche tocco di pura cattiveria (come l'intervento dell'ubriacone). Tra attese e improvvisi scoppi di violenza, il film mantiene una buona tensione e sfrutta con efficacia l'affascinante ambiente naturale - un paradiso che in realtà sotto la sua superficie dorata nasconde un inferno - che conferisce realismo alla situazione.  Il film si gioca un po' su una sola nota e per questo alla lunga tende alla ripetitività, ma l'ingegnosità di alcuni sviluppi mantiene desta l'attenzione sino al finale ben orchestrato in un crescendo di attacchi sfrenati dove gli effetti speciali fanno egregiamente la loro parte, anche se manca forse il colpo d'ala dell'imprevedibilità e fa capolino qualche banalità sentimentale di cui si sarebbe volentieri fatto a meno.  Lo spagnolo Jaume Collet-Serra si era fatto notare con l'egregio horror Orphan e qui conferma buone capacità visuali e di narrazione. Blake Lively regge il film praticamente da sola (assieme, naturalmente, allo squalo) e lo fa con convinzione.

After she said "This is my headstart", she dove into the water and for a second or two, you would see the wound/cover/tourniquet switched to the right leg. <br>------------------------<br><br>The body of the drunk Mexican that collapses on the beach disappears when the two surfers return to the beach; it is never seen again for the remainder of the movie. One would think the two surfers would have discovered the partially-eaten body, as would have the boy kicking the soccer ball and the boy's father. <br>------------------------<br><br>When the kid at the start of the film is watching the found GoPro video, we see the surfer take a tumble on a wave and that's when the shark gets him. When the events are playing out during the film, the same surfer is in a completely different scenario when he's attacked. <br>------------------------<br><br>The height of the rock above the surface of the water varies wildly between shots and doesn't seem to have any relationship to the tide. <br>------------------------<br><br>The body of one of the surfers ends up on the beach to be glanced at by the father of the boy kicking the soccer ball. It was not seen by the boy during the second shot of the boy kicking the soccer ball as the boy ran along the beach, and then turned to run back home. <br>------------------------<br><br>The GoPro footage she sees clearly reveals right at the end when the owner is eaten, that the camera is pretty much destroyed, as the recording is cut off immediately. However, the camera AND the helmet survive pretty much unscathed. <br>------------------------<br><br>There are a few moments in the film where the shark can be heard growling or snarling, sharks have no vocal chords or lungs to make such sounds. <br>------------------------<br><br>Nancy has to get off the rock before the tide covers it. Tides flood and ebb at a speed represented by a sine wave. In other words. the tide turns very slowly, speeds up and slows to a crawl again before the cycle repeats, The film counts down the submerging of the still nicely exposed rock from full tide minus 20 mins or so. In fact the tide would pretty much be at its full height with 20 mins to go. Also, even in gun laden Mexico, hazard marking buoys would not have flare guns concealed in boxes for no apparent reason and the buoy would be a different colour since it didn't seem to be marking any channel, <br>------------------------<br><br>The waves seem to work at the command of the surfers: one minute they are happily surfing huge waves, the next they are sitting down, talking, with the waves non-existent. <br>------------------------<br><br>There are a few instances where the shark is shown backing up after striking an obstacle, something that is physically impossible for a shark. They would have to stop moving altogether and sink back to move backwards. <br>------------------------<br><br>The bay is tidal and yet neither the whale, helmet, surf board or anything else drift from their positions. <br>------------------------<br><br>Sharks are known to have a very fast response action when chasing their prey, when Nancy was pulled down by the chain she would never make it tricking the shark and dodge it to hit the anchor. <br>------------------------<br><br>Sharks don't take things personally. As long as the whale carcass was still around, a great white would have left a human alone. Whale meat is everything great whites need - fat-rich and full of protein. It would have focused on feeding on the whale carcass and pretty much ignored Nancy, who could have made the swim back to shore un-noticed. As it is inferred by Nancy, she has trespassed into the shark's feeding ground, it is no longer about food but about territory. <br>------------------------<br><br>When she dives down with the chain, she didn't equalize sinus pressure as divers would normally do. Her eardrums would likely burst going down that fast at that depth. <br>------------------------<br><br>
