2019. In seguito alla crisi climatica globale gli Stati del mondo collaborano alla costruzione di un sistema satellitare globale in grado di modificare il clima e annullare tempeste, siccità, uragani. <br>Il sistema prende il nome di Dutch Boy ed è stato messo a punto da oltre seicento persone, provenienti da ogni parte del mondo. L'intero progetto fu affidato a Jake Lawson, che viene convocato a Washington, nel Senato, per aver preso decisioni in modo autonomo, senza aver aspettato nessuna autorizzazione. Jake, alla seduta del Senato, non si comporta molto bene, dimostrando subito di non avere peli sulla lingua. Il fratello Max adesso è il nuovo responsabile del Dutch Boy e come tale prende la dura decisione di licenziare Jake. <br>Tre anni dopo: Un corpo militare statunitense si trova in missione in Afghanistan ed assiste ad un evento che ha dello straordinario: in mezzo al deserto c'è stata una bufera di neve, che ha ghiacciato un intero villaggio. Il Presidente indìce una riunione per discutere su quanto appena successo: solo il sottosegretario Max Lawson sembra davvero preoccupato per le condizioni del clima, mentre tutti gli altri pensano a come salvare la faccia dell'America. Lawson propone di inviare nello spazio un team di ingegneri, meccanici e tecnici, con l'obbiettivo di controllare i satelliti e riparare un'eventuale avaria. Il Presidente accoglie la proposta di Max, ma con una piccola variante: non sarà un team ad andare nello spazio, bensì una sola persona. La scelta cade su Jake Lawson. <br>Lawson parte per lo spazio e giunge alla stazione satellitare. A capo della stazione si trova Ute Fassbinder, che affida a Jake un team formato da vari tecnici: Taylor, Hernandez, Adisa, Dussette. <br>Nel frattempo, anche a Hong Kong si verifica un evento climatico dalle dimensioni enormi: un surriscaldamento anomalo porta distruzione e scompiglio. Cheng Long, rappresentante dello Stato cinese, informa Max Lawson che gli eventi verificatisi potrebbero essere dovuti a manomissioni dei Dutch Boy e comporterebbero il manifestarsi di un geostorm, cioè una catastrofe climatica di portata epica. Inoltre, Long solleva il dubbio che, all'interno del governo, ci sia qualcuno che stia insabbiando tutto. Long atterra a Washington per parlare con l'amico Max e riferirgli chi sia il colpevole delle catastrofi, ma non fa in tempo; infatti, un uomo lo spinge mentre sta attraversando la strada e il giovane muore, tra le braccia di un disperato Max. <br>Jake, intanto, viene a conoscenza delle manomissioni all'interno del dispositivo e cerca di scoprire chi possa essere il colpevole. Durante una missione di recupero di un pannello, ha un guasto alla tuta e per pochissimo riesce a salvarsi. Consapevole dell'ennesimo tentativo di sabotaggio, Jake si mette in contatto col fratello e, tramite un codice solo loro, gli comunica la situazione. Max si mette subito al lavoro e, con l'aiuto di Dana, un'esperta informatica, scopre che l'intenzione del sabotatore è quella di creare un geostorm, facendo pensare che si tratti di incidenti. Jake sa che le anomalie del Dutch Boy avvengono tramite l'immissione di virus nel sistema operativo e per eliminarli è necessario che il Dutch venga disattivato per pochi minuti. Questo, ovviamente, comporterebbe conseguenze irreversibili sul clima terrestre, mettendo a repentaglio la vita di migliaia di persone. <br>Nonostante i tentativi per porre rimedio alla catastrofe, parte un conto alla rovescia di novanta minuti, terminati i quali si verificherà il geostorm. Max Lawson deve recuperare i codici killer che permettono a Jake di disattivare il Dutch Boy e porre fine agli incidenti, ma per farlo deve servirsi del Presidente Palma: è lui il codice killer. Max chiede aiuto all'amico e segretario di Stato Leonard Dekkom, sperando che il Presidente collabori. Nel frattempo, anche la stazione spaziale si sta autodistruggendo. Jake individua in Duncan l'artefice dei virus. Il ragazzo, infatti, una volta trovato con le mani nel sacco, confessa il diabolico piano e, dopo una breve lotta con Jake, viene risucchiato nello spazio da un finestrino rotto. <br>Max si ritrova a dover rapire il Presidente per fermare il geostorm. Poco prima, infatti, stava per rimanere ucciso da Dekkom, che cercava di fermarlo. Lawson si rivolge, allora, alla fidanzata, l'agente Sarah Wilson, per portare a termine il suo piano. Il progetto di Dekkom è chiaro: vuole far credere che dietro ai disastri climatici ci sia il Presidente, che, una volta morto, non potrà essere considerato un valido colpevole. In compenso, lui stesso prenderà il suo posto, dopo aver eliminato tutti i suoi successori. Palma fugge insieme e Max e Sarah e vengono inseguiti da Dekkom e dai suoi uomini, che vogliono il Presidente morto. Riescono a mettersi in salvo e ad arrestare Dekkom. <br>Nella stazione spaziale, intanto, gli ospiti iniziano ad abbandonare la struttura, occupando gli shuttle. Solo Jake decide di rimanere, confidando nel fratello, che una volta presi i codici, glieli comunicherà, permettendogli di sistemare Dutch Boy. <br>I codici vengono comunicati a Jake, che li usa per fermare il geostorm, ma sono inefficienti per mettere fine all'autodistruzione del satellite. Jake, quindi, è senza via di scampo e, consapevole del suo sacrificio, si riconcilia col fratello e gli affida la figlia Anna. Lawson, però, non è da solo; Ute Fassbinder non è salita a bordo dello shuttle che l'avrebbe condotta a casa, così come aveva fatto credere. La donna è rimasta per trovarsi al fianco di Jake nella sua ultima missione. <br>La Terra è salva; il Dutch Boy è stato riparato e pulito dai virus. La stazione spaziale si prepara ad autodistruggersi. Ma Jake e Ute fanno un estremo tentativo di salvataggio, salendo su un satellite, con la speranza che possa essere individuato. E così effettivamente avviene. I due vengono agganciati da uno shuttle e vengono riportati a casa. <br>Sei mesi dopo: Jake e Max si ritrovano di nuovo insieme. Jake è pronto per ripartire nello spazio.

When Max and Sarah are discussing options in their living room, Max ends a sentence with "you and me." Dana tries to correct him ("You and I.") and they tell her to shut up. In context, Max used "you and me" correctly and Dana was incorrect. <br>------------------------<br><br>The beard of Gerard Butler increase and decrease at each scene. <br>------------------------<br><br>During the phone call at 43:57 Max Lawson and Cheng Long's phone screens are off. In the next shot, they are on. <br>------------------------<br><br>In the initial sequence, the satellites are shown as modifying and controlling the weather by sending some sorts of missiles and requiring the presence of the main satellite base to provide them with more ammunition. Yet when the geostorm episode starts all satellite suddenly appear to influence the weather using beams and energy waves of some sort, not projectiles anymore, and therefore being able to influence the weather without anyone involved. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Sarah and Max were taking the president to safety, they drive through the two secret service agents. When they show a close up view of the one falling it clearly shows him falling onto a safety mat and not the concrete he was supposed to falling onto. <br>------------------------<br><br>When going to Hong Kong. The text refers to "Hong Kong, China". This is not correct since Hong Kong is it's own province, with it's own flag etc, and are never refered to China like that. It should simply say just "Hong Kong". <br>------------------------<br><br>Just after Cheng Long is hit by the car Secret Service Agent Sarah Wilson follows a vehicle down a street with the dome of The United States Capital clearly shown in the background. There are no streets off of Dupont Circle that would show The Capital building in the line of sight. The closest point would possibly be along Pennsylvanian Avenue via Washington Circle Park which is .6 miles away and that would still require looking through The White House and Executive Building Complex. <br>------------------------<br><br>Dubai is threatened by a tsunami. Tsunamis are caused by earthquakes, not the weather. <br>------------------------<br><br>The shuttle banks into a landing on the flight deck like a fighter, ignoring how objectors actually maneuver in space. On landing in the massive landing deck which is open to space, the doors close and in seconds there is full air pressure and its warm enough to walk out without protective clothing. As the characters greet each other in the background another shuttle departs (using its main engines!) without any apparent effect on the air pressure. <br>------------------------<br><br>The weather control web is presented as a spherical mesh surrounding the earth, with the space station, also in orbit, just above it, with little if any difference in orbital velocity. That part of the mesh, probably its equatorial region, would correctly remain in orbit. The mesh's rotational speed could be offset slightly from orbital speed and the difference in forces could be compensated for by the structural strength of the mesh. However, no matter how fast the mesh was spun, its spin poles would not be held at altitude by any centripetal force and would have to be supported above the earth only by the structural rigidity of the rest of the mesh. This is far, far beyond the strengths of any materials we know of. <br>------------------------<br><br>At the end of the Hong Kong heat/destruction sequence when Cheng Long comes to a stop, the car navigation system shows the temperatures outside cooling down. The car has Hong Kong plates and a steering wheel on the right. However, the system displays the temperature in Fahrenheit, which is not used in Hong Kong. Fahrenheit is spelled in Simplified characters. Hong Kong Chinese, and most American Chinese who left China before characters were officially simplified, use traditional Chinese characters. Car navigation systems usually include a "local" configuration, but a mix of American and mainland Chinese settings is very unlikely. <br>------------------------<br><br>During shuttle flight to the space station, Jake Lawson leaves his seat while engines are still working, and the shuttle has zero gravity inside. According to the laws of physics, zero gravity is possible only if forces acting on shuttle are the same as those working on human body. Working engines cause force acting on shuttle. Zero gravity appears only when engines are off. <br>------------------------<br><br>When the underground pipes are melting, the temperature outside the car is 135 Fahrenheit. Iron melts at 2,800 Fahrenheit. It is possible that it is magma breaking through which would melt pipes as if they were butter. Magma displacement would also explain the crazily fast temperature peak and fall. <br>------------------------<br><br>The space station has a relatively small ring section that rotates to generate artificial (centripetal) gravity, which shows that other forms of artificial gravity don't exist in the movie (as in the real world), but the bulk of the station including the hangar bays (large and visibly not part of the rotating section) somehow have gravity. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Jake Lawson (Gerald Butler) meets Ute Fassbinder for the first time in space, she is portrayed as being German (name & accent). On her left arm is however the Dutch flag visible, not the German. Later on in in the movie, the flag on her uniform has magically changed into a German flag. <br>------------------------<br><br>At the beginning of the film when the UN soldiers show up at the Afghanistan village that has been frozen, they walk about in what seems to be very comfortable temperatures and you don't even see anyone's breath in the "cold". In fact, when one soldier touches a frozen individual his hand breaks off due to it being, supposedly, so frozen it is brittle. If the temperature was still so cold that they bodies were still frozen to the point of being brittle then they soldiers walking about would at least be showing some effects as well. <br>------------------------<br><br>
