Veronica Rawlins è sposata a Harry e con lui ha ancora una relazione appassionata e sensuale, ma Harry muore durante un colpo, perpetrato ai danni del gangster nero Jamal Manning, che sta cercando di entrare in politica. Jamal vuole soffiare il distretto di Chicago dove vive alla famiglia Mulligan, la quale lo controlla da sempre ma candida il meno esperto Jack dopo che alcune accuse e l'età hanno reso impresentabile il suo oppressivo padre Tom. <br>Il colpo di Harry finisce non solo in una strage in cui muore tutta la sua banda, ma pure in un incendio che brucia il denaro, tanto che Jamal decide di chiedere un risarcimento a Veronica, cui il marito ha lasciato una bella auto e un lussuoso loft... oltre che una cassetta di sicurezza in cui è nascosto il suo quaderno degli appunti su un prossimo colpo. Veronica decide di realizzare quella rapina e cerca di convincere le altre vedove della banda, Linda Perelli e Alice Gunner, a essere sue complici.
