Nella Parigi degli anni trenta il venticinquenne Henri Charrière, soprannominato "Papillon", viene incastrato per un omicidio che non ha mai commesso e condannato all'ergastolo. Viene mandato ai lavori forzati nella peggiore colonia carceraria sull'Isola del Diavolo nella Guyana francese. Intenzionato a riconquistare la libertà, Papillon progetta numerose fughe instaurando un'alleanza con il falsario Louis Dega, che, in cambio della sua protezione, accetta di finanziare la fuga di Papillon. Tra i due uomini nasce un profondo e duraturo legame d'amicizia.

Charlie Hunnam has obviously never eaten a coconut in real life. When he gets one in the bucket, (neatly sawn in half by props), he gnaws at it like a rat. In fact, the only way to eat a coconut is to crack the shell first and detach the flesh from the broken pieces of shell. <br>------------------------<br><br>After their first night at the prison, Dega has a large bite on his arm. Several scenes later his arm is clear, the next scene the bite is seen again. <br>------------------------<br><br>It shows the Moulin Rouge Cinema in Paris and the BAL entrance next door as being on a round corner of the street on different roads, in fact they are all on a straight line to each other to this day. <br>------------------------<br><br>French authorities released penal colony records that contradicted Henri Charrière's story, amongst other details, Charrière had never been imprisoned on Devil's Island. <br>------------------------<br><br>Henri Charrière spent several months living with the natives in Colombia, not one day. and he was arrested after he left them. <br>------------------------<br><br>Louis Dega never escaped the French Guiana prison with Henri Charrière. <br>------------------------<br><br>The prison warden says Henri Charrière was in solitary for 5 years but he was only in for 2 after being recaptured. He was also only about 32 years old at this time but has gone completely gray. <br>------------------------<br><br>At the beginning the place and year are stated as Paris, 1931. When Charriere enters the night club the song Bei mir bist du schon is being sung and played. This song was not written until 1932. <br>------------------------<br><br>
