Nel 1561, alla morte di suo marito Francesco II di Francia, Maria Stuarda ritorna in Scozia e si stabilisce presso il suo fratellastro Giacomo Stewart, allo scopo di rivendicare la corona di Scozia e farsi riconoscere come successore da sua cugina Elisabetta I d'Inghilterra. Questa, non sposata e incapace di dare un erede al regno, comincia ad avvertirla come un pericolo, poiché essendo una Stuart potrebbe accampare maggiori diritti sul suo trono. Maria, cattolica, si attira inoltre le antipatie di John Knox, membro del suo consiglio di fede protestante; l'uomo, cui viene tolta la carica, inizia una campagna d'odio contro la regina. <br>Elisabetta crede che il miglior modo per tenere sotto controllo le mire di Maria sia quella di renderla sua suddita facendole sposare un cittadino inglese, così le invia il suo amante Robert Dudley perché la sposi; Maria inizialmente rifiuta, poiché questi non è nobile e inoltre è molto chiaro quanto lui sia innamorato della regina. Elisabetta cerca così un incontro con la cugina, ma viene colpita dal vaiolo; pensando che la regina sia prossima alla morte, Maria accetta il matrimonio con Dudley per aumentare le chance di salire al trono, ma Elisabetta, stravolta dall'amore e dalla malattia, impedisce al suo amante di sposarla. Le invia così Lord Henry Darnley, il quale dice di volersi stabilire in Scozia per la libertà religiosa che Maria concede ai suoi sudditi; la donna sa che le sta mentendo, ma il fascino dell'uomo è tale che gli si affeziona e accetta la sua corte. <br>Il Consiglio di Elisabetta, conscio che la carica di Lord di Darnley in effetti aumenti il diritto di Maria al trono, impone alla sovrana di rimandare Dudley da Maria; anche i consiglieri di quest'ultima ritengono che l'uomo voglia in realtà ottenere la carica di re sposandola. Gli inglesi mandano così degli ambasciatori perché impediscano a Maria di sposare Darnley, ma questa rifiuta perché è ben conscia dell'importanza di questo matrimonio; anche suo fratello, tuttavia, le volta le spalle poiché non vuole andare in guerra contro l'Inghilterra a causa di questa unione. Giacomo si unirà agli inglesi in una rivolta contro Maria, ma questa verrà presto sedata da Maria, che gli risparmia comunque la vita. <br>Maria sposa Darnley, ma successivamente lo scopre a letto col suo amico e musico Davide Rizzio; questo viene perdonato, con la promessa che in futuro farà molta attenzione a non destare scandalo nella corte. Una volta scoperta l'omosessualità di suo marito, Maria lo costringe ad avere un rapporto sessuale con lei allo scopo di avere una gravidanza, che in effetti arriva. Il figlio che porta in grembo sarà erede del trono di Scozia e Inghilterra, cosa che ovviamente sconvolge il Consiglio inglese. Giacomo intanto si allea col padre di Darnley, che vuole togliere il trono a Maria per darlo a suo figlio, e i due ordiscono un complotto: fanno passare lo stesso Rizzio come amante di Maria e possibile padre del bambino che lei aspetta. Lo stesso Darnley, pur innamorato di Rizzio, è uno dei firmatari del patto. Maria cerca di salvare il suo amico dagli assalitori, ma questo viene pugnalato a morte. L'ultimo a tirare il colpo mortale è lo stesso Darnley: questo segnerà una rottura tra lui e Maria. <br>In seguito a questi avvenimenti, Maria si impegna a perdonare suo fratello se questi gli porterà le prove che suo marito è stato tra i complottisti, cosa che in effetti avviene. Maria si riappacifica con Giacomo, chiedendogli di essere un buono zio per il nascituro; scrive inoltre a Elisabetta chiedendole di essere la sua madrina. Le due fanno un accordo: se Elisabetta avrà un figlio, questo sarà l'erede al trono di Inghilterra; se morirà senza eredi, sarà il figlio di Maria a salire su entrambi i troni di Scozia e Inghilterra, cosa che sconvolge il Consiglio inglese. Inoltre Maria allontana Darnley, ma rifiuta di divorziare da lui come vorrebbe il Consiglio scozzese. Gli scozzesi propongono così a James Hepburn, duca di Bothwell e guardia personale di Maria, di diventare suo marito in seguito alla morte di Darnley, che viene ucciso nel corso di un attentato esplosivo. <br>Maria è costretta a fuggire e a sposare Bothwell, poiché il Consiglio le impone di sposare immediatamente uno scozzese. Questo dà a Knox occasione di scagliarsi contro di lei, dipingendola come una prostituta e indicandola come mandante dell'omicidio di Darnley allo scopo di esaudire i suoi desideri sessuali. Il Consiglio, vedendo la sua immagine ormai compromessa, suggerisce a Maria di abdicare e lasciare la Scozia a Giacomo. Bothwell è furioso, ma Maria gli rivela che questo è tutto un piano di suo fratello e del Consiglio per toglierle il regno. Giacomo, che ha preso in ostaggio il figlio neonato di Maria, le chiede di abdicare, ma lei rifiuta e fugge in Inghilterra per cercare protezione da Elisabetta, lasciando il bambino in Scozia. <br>Elisabetta e Maria si incontrano in gran segreto. Maria chiede a sua cugina protezione e un esercito per riprendersi il trono scozzese; Elisabetta le concede protezione, ma dichiara di non poter aiutare una cattolica. Le due hanno quindi un drammatico confronto durante il quale Maria rinfaccia a Elisabetta di non volerla aiutare solo per mantenere il suo trono; Elisabetta le risponde di aver sempre invidiato la sua bellezza e il fatto di aver avuto un figlio, cose alle quali lei ha rinunciato in favore della Ragione di Stato; tuttavia riconosce che queste stesse cose ora stanno portando Maria alla rovina. Successivamente ordina che venga imprigionata in Inghilterra. <br>Molti anni dopo, Maria viene accusata di aver cospirato contro Elisabetta; questa sa che si tratta di una bugia, ma è costretta a firmare la sua esecuzione. Mentre Elisabetta piange per la sorte della cugina, Maria si reca al patibolo rivelando sotto le vesti un abito rosso che indica il martirio. Nei suoi ultimi istanti prima della decapitazione, Maria pensa a suo figlio e spera che il suo sacrificio lo aiuti a portare pace sul regno. <br>Successivamente, alla morte di Elisabetta nel 1603, il figlio di Maria Giacomo sarà il primo sovrano a regnare su Scozia e Inghilterra.

However in real life after her execution the executioner held up her head and it rolled away from him because she had a red wig covering her gray hair. <br>------------------------<br><br>Queen Mary lived in France from the time she was five until she was eighteen, and her mother Mary of Guise was French. She likely spoke with a French accent. Her Scottish realm would have spoken three languages - Broad Scots, Scottish Gaelic and Norn (related to Norwegian and Danish). The latest Scottish king recorded as able to speak Gaelic was James IV. Gaelic was spoken in the Highlands and northern & western parts of the Lowlands in Mary's reign. There is no evidence she could speak Norn, which was from Orkney & Shetland. She could however speak Broad Scots, which was spoken in the big towns and much of the Lowlands, and which was mutually intelligible with English to some extent. <br>------------------------<br><br>In real life Mary and Elizabeth never actually met face to face. <br>------------------------<br><br>At several points modern conifer plantations can be seen in the background. <br>------------------------<br><br>Several shots of large houses and castles show lawns that are immaculate and obviously mowed by modern machine and fertilized with modern methods for uniformity of color. The technology available in the 1570s and 1580s could not have yielded such greenery. <br>------------------------<br><br>Mary's son, James VI, did not bring the peace stated, and in fact many of his actions led ultimately to the English Civil War and the Irish Troubles in later generations. <br>------------------------<br><br>Black people were recorded in England, and to a much lesser extent in Scotland, before the 1600s, but they did not wield the power displayed in the film, nor were any people of mostly African descent in the aristocracy of either country. <br>------------------------<br><br>Queen Elizabeth did not have any ladies in waiting of East Asian origin, and certainly not Bess of Hardwick who was red headed in real life. <br>------------------------<br><br>Queen Elizabeth also claimed the throne of France, although this is not mentioned in the film. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Mary gets undressed for the night her hair-ornament and hairpieces are removed and locks hang down her face. The next moment, when she sits on her bed and chats to her maids, her hair is tied back from her face. In the next shot her locks are tumbling down her face again. <br>------------------------<br><br>The movie spans about sixteen years. With the notable exception of Queen Elizabeth who is seen to suffer from smallpox which gradually improves but leaves her face permanently scarred. The main characters do not seem to age during the sixteen years: they do not grow gray hairs, gain or lose weight, have changed hairlines or appear to walk with any less agility. <br>------------------------<br><br>At the end of the film, Elizabeth's title is stated as queen of 'England and Wales'. This title was never used by any English monarch, as Wales was never an autonomous kingdom of its own. Alternatively, Elizabeth I would have claimed the title 'Queen of England, France, and Ireland, Defender of the Faith'. <br>------------------------<br><br>Mary, Queen of Scots issues a pardon to Henry, Lord Darnley for his part in the plot to kill David Rizzio. No such pardon was ever issued by the queen, as Darnley was never indicted in this plot. <br>------------------------<br><br>Queen Mary is shown more than once with multiple pierced earrings in one or both ears. While most actresses do have pierced ears and don't bother covering the holes in period films, it's especially inaccurate to depict a British queen in the 16th century wearing multiple earrings. <br>------------------------<br><br>John Knox, Minister within the Church of Scotland, is portrayed periodically throughout the film as a vocal opponent of Queen Mary, even sitting in her privy council early in the film. Historically he had no presence in Mary's court, and never had any official position within her government, as the Church of Scotland became formally independent from the Scottish Crown a generation prior, under the reign of James V. <br>------------------------<br><br>The film contends that Henry, Lord Darnley had the ambition to attain the title of king and legal sovereignty after marrying his wife, Mary, Queen of Scots. In fact, he was already granted this title in July of 1565, prior to marrying Mary, and had no need to contest this with the nobility. <br>------------------------<br><br>The film depicts Mary as being fairly young at the time of her death. In reality, she was in her mid forties when she was executed. <br>------------------------<br><br>Darnley was sent to Kirk o' Field because he fell ill with the pox, and was in medical quarantine at the time, not because he was exiled there. <br>------------------------<br><br>Towards the end of the film, John Knox admonishes the queen for taking a third husband and murdering Lord Darnley. Knox did makes these claims against Mary, but not until after she abdicated and was imprisoned in England. Denouncing her while she reigned would have been an act of treason. <br>------------------------<br><br>The film portrays David Rizzio, the private secretary of Queen Mary I, as being murdered by the order and consent of Henry, Lord Darnley. This murder did take place, but Lord Darnley had no involvement with the affair. Patrick Ruthven is widely agreed to have been the architect of the murder of Rizzio. <br>------------------------<br><br>
