Michael e la sua banda sono capaci di colpi grossi: sono ex militari e poliziotti corrotti, addestrati, armati, senza scrupoli. La russa Irina, però, li tiene in pugno, e questa volta l'unico modo per accontentarla sembra essere quello di far scattare un 999. Solo uccidendo un agente, infatti, e sfruttando il richiamo di tutte le volanti sul luogo, Michael e i suoi avranno tutto il tempo di andare a segno altrove. Se poi quell'agente è Chris, nuovo del reparto e nipote del capo, ancora meglio. O forse no. Forse qualcosa andrà storto, in maniera del tutto imprevedibile, perché così è la vita e così funziona il buon cinema. Se si eccettua il passo falso di Lawless, gangster movie letterario sporcato di western e di melodramma, Hillcoat è apparso da subito un regista da tenere d'occhio, uno capace di sorprendere. In fondo, oggi si può dire che è servito anche il passo falso, perché è lì che Hillcoat ha cominciato a guardare a Mann come modello, ma è solo con Codice 999 che quello sguardo ha trovato il fuoco. E non è questione di imitazione, per nostra fortuna, ma di ritmo e di mestiere. C'è un piacere speciale nel venire acchiappati dentro un ingranaggio filmico che non s'inceppa e Hillcoat ci regala questo giro di giostra, sulle strade di Atlanta, dove i personaggi sono tanti e ognuno ha la sua faccia pubblica e il suo retroscena privato, ma qualche volta il bene sta dalla parte di chi ha il caos in casa e il male assoluto è biondo e furbo come Kate Winslet, qualche volta, cioè, quando è la volta buona come questa, sai forse cosa succederà ma non puoi dire come. Ritmato dal montatore di Zero Dark Thirty e musicato da Atticus Ross (produttore dei Nine Inch Nails), Codice 999 è un solido e "atmosferico" cop-movie, che ha i suoi punti di forza nel cast e nella scrittura, oltre che in una regia che garantisce controllo, coerenza e personalità. Il cast, che appare perfetto, è curiosamente frutto di una serie di defezioni che ne hanno modificato i connotati (Shia LaBeouf doveva stare al posto di Casey Affleck, Cate Blanchett della Winslet), mentre la sceneggiatura di Matt Cook (che esce dal cassetto della "Black List" di Hollywood) è di quelle silenziosamente preziose, che sembrano tutta azione e zero psicologia ma hanno un'anima più ingombrante del previsto. Dentro questa girandola di violenza e paura, che s'inpenna attorno ad una vita sola da salvare, una vita "qualunque", c'è l'ironia del destino, la dolenza del noir e la fotografia in movimento di un pezzetto di mondo, piccolo come un quartiere, che il buon cinema sa rendere (in) grande.

Kate Winslet's Russian name in the film is Irina Vlasov, which is actually incorrect. This is because, being a female, her last name would end with a vowel to designate that she is female, so her last name would be Vlasova, rather than Vlasov. This is common mistake in English-language films and TV series. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Chris and Franco are in the garage elevator, they get off on the 7th floor, but the wall on that floor indicates they're on the 5th floor. <br>------------------------<br><br>At 19:20 into the film, while the police sergeant is speaking to the detectives, Chris is looking at the floor to his left, but then in the next shot (continuous with the sarge's dialog) he is looking up at Marcus to his right. <br>------------------------<br><br>No police unit would attempt to clear a darkened building without lights of any kind. <br>------------------------<br><br>As the crew leaves the bank, Michael pulls the pins on two distraction devices (flash-bang grenades) and places them on the door handles; however, the safety levers (aka "spoons") are still on the grenades. As the crew gets in the van, there is an explosion in the bank, implying that the grenades have gone off. First, flash-bangs are mostly light and sound; they would not explode in flames and blow out windows. Second, that's not how grenades work: You pull the pin and the safety lever flies off as the primer strikes the fuse; fuse time varies but is generally under five seconds. <br>------------------------<br><br>At the beginning credits and throughout the movie, even though the location is Atlanta, Georgia, the codes used are California Penal Code sections and West Coast police radio codes - i.e. 211 for robbery, 207 for kidnap, 415 for disturbance. <br>------------------------<br><br>In the first sceenes during the intro a car detonates. The scene is from Budapest, Hungary. Also the license plate is in Hungarian. <br>------------------------<br><br>The Budapest scene in the intro is from the 'I spy' movie. <br>------------------------<br><br>After Michael fires his shotgun into the ceiling, he racks the slide and ejects a spent shell, which can be heard bouncing on the tile floor.
