Michelle lascia il proprio compagno e mentre guida nella notte ha un incidente. Si risveglia bloccata da manette in un bunker con un tutore a una gamba e una flebo nel braccio. Un certo Howard dice di averla raccolta in strada e di averla portata lì per il suo bene. Michelle non sa che all'esterno sono accaduti eventi catastrofici e che solo rimanendo lì con lui e con il più giovane Emmett potrà sopravvivere. La ragazza ha però più di un motivo per dubitare e cerca di trovare un modo per fuggire. Correva l'anno 2008 quando J.J. Abrams, con la complicità di Matt Reeves alla regia, architettava un'operazione destinata a mutare, almeno in parte, le coordinate dei disaster movies. Torna ora, con un diverso regista, a richiamare, con un accenno nel titolo, quel piccolo ma importante film. Ci si muove però sul terreno del thriller psicologico del quale Trachtenberg conosce bene tutti gli elementi strutturali. Perché funzionino e non diano origine a un B-movie è però necessario avere un cast all'altezza. In questa occasione la scelta è stata più che oculata perché a una Mary Elizabeth Winstead (femminile e determinata al punto giusto) viene contrapposto un John Goodman al suo meglio. Goodman è un attore che, nel corso della sua lunga carriera, ha saputo mostrarsi in grado di interpretare sia ruoli di omone benevole e friendly così come quelli di persona di cui temere le reazioni. Qui alterna i due volti con una duttilità che finisce con il costituire il fulcro della narrazione. Howard è un pericoloso psicopatico che utilizza il suo bunker antiatomico per seviziare, psicologicamente e non solo, vittime innocenti oppure la situazione esterna che descrive corrisponde al vero? La tensione viene conservata fino a pochi minuti da un finale che rischia però di indebolirne la portata. Perché nei film le spiegazioni in chiusura inficiano spesso la qualità (se c'era) di ciò che le precedeva. Qui la qualità non mancava ma le spiegazioni sono davvero troppe.

When running from Howard before escaping the bunk, Michelle is bare-foot. She goes into her room to collect the "hazmat suit" and we see her boots on the floor there, but she leaves the room still bare-foot. Moments later, when she climbs on the table to go into the air-ventilation opening, she has those boots on. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Michelle hides in the shed outside, it is evening. Moments later, when she looks out of the shed, it is night. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Ben calls Michelle, she is driving through the night and the car's clock shows it is 12:14 am, albeit her phone claims it's 6:29pm. <br>------------------------<br><br>From the opening scenes in her apartment until the musical montage where Michelle, Emmett and Howard are settling into a mindless routine, her nail polish is gradually peeling away. In one shot when she is moving puzzle pieces her nails are clean. In the following scenes the same nail polish is on again. <br>------------------------<br><br>The amount of spaghetti sauce on Emmet's plate changes between shots during the first dinner scene. <br>------------------------<br><br>John Goodman was attacked by Michelle and he had to have stitches. He was left with a tiny red scar.. In one scene, he had Michelle follow him down a hallway. He had a bandage on it (the scene before, no bandage) and then the next scene, it was gone. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Michelle is waiting behind the door to attack Howard and is holding her crutch as a weapon, the screws are changing from on top to bottom of the crutch between shots. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Goodman's character brings ice cream to Michelle; between shots you can see his ice cream in his cone go from freshly scooped to licked between shots. <br>------------------------<br><br>When running from Howard before escaping the bunk, in the burning room Michelle places the "hazmat suit" on the table in order to move the table. Suddenly when Michelle pushes the table to reach the vent the hazmat suit is not on the table anymore but once again in her right hand. <br>------------------------<br><br>Howard indicates that the shelter he built is "underneath my farmhouse" in rural Louisiana. However, the water table in much of Louisiana is so high that it would make the building of an underground shelter like Howard's totally unfeasible. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Michelle is looking at Emmett's driver's license it says Class D Personal Driver's License. In Louisiana a Personal Driver's License is a Class E. A Class D License is a Chauffeur's License. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Michelle is on the road driving from New Orleans her registration tag is clearly a Texas tag and not a Louisiana tag. <br>------------------------<br><br>It's super unlikely a home made gas mask would protect anyone from an alien gas attack. <br>------------------------<br><br>Howard has an issue with plates and glasses being set on his "family heirloom" dinner table; and asks Michelle to always be sure that place-mats and coasters are used. You might think with his Strict Navy past and rules/short temper, that he would also have set his 2 bottles on something during the first dinner scene, but there was nothing below them. <br>------------------------<br><br>Howard's bunker/shelter design comes with a serious flaw, as he claimed he couldn't fit through the opening to fix the air pumps should a problem arise. <br>------------------------<br><br>From the main floor there is about a 3 foot staircase into the kitchen. From the kitchen there is about a 12 foot staircase to the outside doors. This makes the main floor be about 15 feet below the ground level.The whole air filtration system situation suggest a different thing. The duct opening the heroine climbs into is 6 foot above the floor. Near the end of the air duct there is an about 4 foot high "incline" that she climbs up to get into the air filtration room. The room is minimum 8 foot high. From the room there is a ladder to the hatch outside. The hatch is level with the ground and is at least 6 feet from the ceiling of the air filtration room. This suggests the main floor is 24 feet below ground, not 15. Even though all numbers are approximate, there is clearly a disconnect. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Ben is calling, Michelle answers the phone but does not put it on speaker. In fact, when the screen of the phone is shown the icon indicating whether the speaker is on/off it clearly is off. <br>------------------------<br><br>Howard's cut does not suddenly heal between shots. It heals slowly and is a sign of the passage of time while they are in the bunker. Similarly, Michelle's nail polish is shown to slowly wear off. Both of these are meant to show that they have been in the bunker for longer than it may seem.<br><br>Also, the blood on Megan's earring was not wet, it was obviously dry. However, the death of Megan/Brittany is purposefully debatable. <br>------------------------<br><br>Howard's radio in the bunker was a VHF radio tuned to channel 16, the international distress frequency. The radio transmissions that Michelle hears in the car are AM transmissions and would not have been heard on Howard's bunker radio. <br>------------------------<br><br>In the beginning, while Michelle is driving and on the phone with Ben, she is hearing on speaker phone. On her phone though, the speaker icon is not lit up meaning that the phone would not be on speaker. Michelle's phone does have Bluetooth active, and since most modern cars do have Bluetooth connectivity through the audio system, it is entirely possible she is indeed using that system while on the phone with Ben. <br>------------------------<br><br>At the beginning of the film, when Michelle checks her phone while driving, the clock at the top shows that the time is 6:29pm. When she eventually wakes up in the bunker, the time on her phone still shows the time as 6:29pm.<br><br>However, it is revealed that she has been unconscious for "a couple of days", so the time of days is not an error. <br>------------------------<br><br>The radio in Howard's very sophisticated doomsday shelter can't detect any radio signals, but Michelle's car radio easily finds them. The radio broadcasts are picked up at the end of the film, and due to their nature it is unclear whether they were being sent earlier, or whether Howard was being honest about there being no outside assistance given that he was keeping Michelle hostage. <br>------------------------<br><br>There are several things that signify that are anachronistic if this film takes place directly after or simultaneous with the events in 'Cloverfield': (1) Emmett claims that all the kids are saying "YOLO" these days. If the film presumably takes place around the same time or shortly after the original Cloverfield attack (May-April 2008), then very few kids, if any at all, were saying "YOLO", a term that wasn't popularized until 2011 by rapper Drake; (2) Michelle has a modern iPhone; (3) The registration on Michelle's car expires 07/2015; (4) Emmett's drivers license expires in 2018, etc... But there is no evidence to suggest that the events in this film are directly related to the events depicted in 'Cloverfield'. JJ Abrams has never confirmed anything other than that this film is a "blood relative" to the first film. The events may be related, but set years apart, or the story may not be set in the same fictional universe. <br>------------------------<br><br>Howard spent a fortune and a lot of time building his shelter. It is very likely he would have stocked his own hazmat suits or at least a couple of gas masks. <br>------------------------<br><br>When they are playing Milton Bradley's Game of Life, the board is modern but the game's box (in the background) is from the 1980s. That box came with a different style board than the one the characters are playing. <br>------------------------<br><br>During the first dinner scene (around 33mins), there are 2 bottles of drink on the table, and 3 empty glasses. Howard opens one of the bottles and pours half into Michelle's glass. Emmett then manages to reach across the table and take the bottle (even though the bottle is out of reach and Michelle is holding her cutlery) - Emmett then half fills his glass, emptying the bottle.Despite Howard never opening the second bottle (which is still unopened on the table) and never filling his own glass; his glass is also half full a few shots later. <br>------------------------<br><br>John Goodman's character had a radio in the bunker that he stated had no transmitions (stating everyone was dead), yet when the main character escapes, on her car radio she hears all about the war against fighting the aliens. <br>------------------------<br><br>When the alien spaceship is lifting the car, the windshield wipers are working. However that would be impossible if there are no keys in the engine. <br>------------------------<br><br>When the infected lady comes knocking at the door you see her black Lincoln's headlights on. When Michelle escapes the bunker she starts the car. We could expect that the car would've died or run out of gas. But Michelle has to retrieve the keys from the dead lady's pockets, meaning the engine was not running. And many cars have headlights that stay on for a short while after the car is stopped. <br>------------------------<br><br>
