James Cleveland "Jesse" Owens parte per l'università, lasciando una figlia piccola, una ragazza ancora da sposare e una famiglia d'origine in precarie condizioni economiche. Sembra già una conquista, ma qualche mese dopo, grazie al coach dell'Ohio University, Larry Snyder, Jesse ottiene la convocazione per le Olimpiadi di Berlino. È il 1936 e la politica di epurazione razziale di Hitler divide il Comitato Olimpico Americano: partecipare o boicottare? La comunità afroamericana si pone lo stesso problema. Jesse sa una cosa: se andrà, non potrà permettersi di non vincere. Il regista Stephen Hopkins non è nuovo alla biografia: quella di Peter Sellers aveva fatto infuriare chi la trovava esageratamente critica tanto quanto chi la giudicava non abbastanza mostruosa. Con Race, titolo dal doppio significato, sembra evitare il rischio in partenza, rinunciando alle sfumature e optando risolutamente per un ritratto eroico di Owens, dall'inizio alla fine, nello sport e nella vita. D'altronde - sembra dire Hopkins - i conflitti esterni al personaggio sono tali e tanti che lo mantengono comunque e perennemente sotto pressione. E così è: la scelta di raccontare i giochi olimpici più controversi della storia porta con sé una quantità di materiale narrativo ingente, e il regista lo gestisce aspirando ad un modello di racconto classico, che in qualche momento gli riesce bene e in altri meno. La volontà di mantenersi politicamente corretto (per esempio conducendo il film sul binario parallelo del riscatto del coach bianco insieme al campione nero) riduce, però, il tasso di tensione, così come l'impressione che il battere ogni record non costi a Owens fatica alcuna, e l'immagine del suo reiterato primato, nello stadio bianco che doveva magnificare agli occhi del mondo il Terzo Reich, resta la sola a tentare di ristabilire un equilibrio. La regia, più che altro, vive di rendita della forza della Storia, limitandosi a non fare danni quando si tratta di mettere in campo le interpretazioni di Goebbels e di Leni Reifensthal, qui sdoganata come artista super partes, ben voluta e finanziata dal Fuhrer ma interessata ad un altro fine assoluto, la riuscita del suo film. Del suo uso potenzialmente strumentale dell'atleta di Cleveland, così come della censura che gli Stati Uniti del Sud operarono sulla notizia dei miracoli berlinesi di Jesse Owens, il film non fa menzione. Race corre alla meta ma, dal punto di vista filmico, è una vittoria poco sudata: senza le sfumature, la foto-ricordo è piatta.

Some say he actually competed in the long jump. "Broad jump" and "long jump" are alternate names for the same event. A jump started from a standstill was called a "standing long jump" or "standing broad jump." Even if the event's official name was the Long Jump, characters (including announcers) talking about a broad jump would be technically correct. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Jesse is tying up his spikes, the two white stripes are missing, and the area around the eyelets should be white as well. <br>------------------------<br><br>As Jesse says goodbye to his father and goes off to college, he leaves an envelope containing money on the table. His father opens the envelope, revealing the reverse side of a $1 bill, with a design that was not yet in circulation in 1933.
