Dopo tre anni del suo viaggio quinquennale, la nave stellare della Federazione USS Enterprise fa tappa alla stazione spaziale Yorktown, che riceve una richiesta di soccorso da parte della vicinissima nebulosa. È una trappola: appena giunta, l'Enterprise subisce un violentissimo attacco da parte di uno sciame di navi aliene sconosciute, che distruggono la nave della Federazione. L'equipaggio sopravvissuto effettua un atterraggio d'emergenza su un pianeta vicino, dove deve affrontare un nuovo e pericoloso nemico, Krall, un tiranno malvagio che cattura gli equipaggi delle navi che passano nelle vicinanze col suo sciame di navette monoposto. Krall brama un manufatto alieno custodito sull'Enterprise, recuperato da Kirk in una precedente missione.<br>L'ingegnere capo Scott, disperso sul pianeta, viene soccorso da Jaylah, un'aliena precipitata anni prima sempre a causa di Krall; la ragazza decide di aiutare i sopravvissuti dell'Enterprise. Essa vive nella USS Franklin, una piccola nave della Federazione che era stata la prima a superare curvatura 4, quasi un centinaio di anni prima, sotto il comando del capitano Balthazar Edison, e considerata scomparsa da molto tempo, a causa, si presume, di un tunnel spazio-temporale. Dopo avere liberato il resto dell'equipaggio dell'Enterprise catturato da Krall e dai suoi due luogotenenti, Kirk e gli altri ufficiali della Federazione scoprono che il piano di Krall è di scatenare lo sciame sulla stazione Yorktown per causare il maggior numero di vittime possibili, usando un'antica arma biologica, di cui fa parte il manufatto alieno sottratto all'Enterprise.<br>L'equipaggio dell'Enterprise rimette quindi in sesto la Franklin, e la guida alla Yorktown per fermare lo sciame. Questo si rivela sensibile alle onde corte emesse da una radio, che costituiscono il legame della loro mente collettiva, e quindi dalla vecchia nave parte una compilation di musica alla stessa frequenza, che disturba l'unione dello sciame e lo porta ad autodistruggersi. Rimasto solo, Krall decide di portare egli stesso l'arma all'interno di Yorktown e di utilizzarla anche a costo della vita. Uhura nel frattempo scopre dai registri della nave che Krall non è altri che Balthazar Edison, precipitato con la Franklin sul pianeta della nebulosa, dove ha scoperto lo sciame, i droni e un pezzo dell'arma lasciati da una civiltà aliena. Lui e i restanti due sopravvissuti dell'equipaggio si avvalgono di una tecnologia che allunga la vita risucchiandola dalle altre forme di vita, sopravvivendo per centinaia di anni pur assumendo fattezze aliene.<br>Il desiderio di vendetta di Krall/Edison contro la Federazione è dovuto al suo passato: egli, ex marine spaziale pluridecorato, si era sentito sminuito al comando di una pacifica astronave come la Franklin, sotto la pacifica Federazione, che ritiene inoltre colpevole di averlo abbandonato. Kirk alla fine riesce a scatenare l'arma biologica su Krall, espellendolo poi nello spazio, al termine di una cruenta lotta in quasi assenza di gravità, dato che si trovavano al centro della sferica Yorktown.<br>Dopo la battaglia Kirk rifiuta il grado di vice ammiraglio e Spock, che aveva pensato di lasciare l'equipaggio per unirsi al resto dei vulcaniani sopravvissuti alla distruzione del loro pianeta nel primo film, decide di rimanere con i suoi amici e continuare la sua relazione con Nyota Uhura sulla neo-ricostruita Enterprise-A.

Kirk immediately orders the ship to go to warp after Krall's initial attack on the Enterprise destroys the main deflector dish, but the deflector dish is effectively required to travel at warp speed. Without it debris, rocks and particle matter would be able to impact the ship at faster-than-light speeds, causing considerable damage.<br><br>This may not be an error on Kirk's part however - given that the Enterprise cannot effectively defend itself against the attackers and is taking critical damage, he may have made the tactical decision that a jump to warp without the deflector was an acceptable risk in an effort to save the ship. <br>------------------------<br><br>While it has been established that the Franklin was the first "Warp-4" vessel and was drafted into Starfleet at a later point after the events of "Enterprise", thereby earning the "NX-326" designation, the "NX" designation is still in fact an error. Within the Star Trek universe, NX is a designation used for lead ships in a new class during their evaluation and testing phases (such as USS Excelsior being NX-2000 in Star Trek III, but is designated NCC-2000 by the time Sulu is commanding in Star Trek VI) - as Franklin was already 10+ years old by the time the Federation was created and had already been replaced by more advanced technology (NX-01 Enterprise), the vessel would have been assigned an NCC-326 designation and not NX-326. <br>------------------------<br><br>In one shot Spock starts to cry and a tear runs down his cheek, in the next shot, the tear is gone. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Uhura talks with Krall for the first time Uhura's hair on her left shoulder switches between takes. It is both on her back when you see Uhura talking and in the front of her body when you see her from the back. <br>------------------------<br><br>An female Orion crew member is seen locked up in the corral behind Sulu. Later, as they escape her skin is no longer green. <br>------------------------<br><br>The USS Franklin is flown off the cliff at one quarter impulse. Since full impulse is equivalent to a quarter of the speed of light, one quarter impulse is ~40 million mph, which if available would not lead to the behavior of the ship seen in the film - the ship would fly straight up out of the planet's atmosphere within seconds. <br>------------------------<br><br>Ranks are awarded, not applied for. As such, Kirk couldn't have "applied" to be Vice Admiral of Yorktown. Moreover, since the person in charge of Yorktown was Commodore Paris, a Vice Admiral rank would put Kirk above her by 2 ranks, effectively giving Kirk 3 promotions at once (from Captain over Commodore & over Rear Admiral straight to Vice Admiral). Finally, a lower rank (to the "new" rank, in this case Commodore) wouldn't normally ever advise someone of higher rank of their "application acceptance" and promotion. An Admiral or Fleet Admiral would normally advise a new Vice Admiral of their new rank. <br>------------------------<br><br>When they decide to broadcast the Beastie Boys with a VHF frequency, they must get close because of TV broadcast's limited range. On Earth, the tower must be "line of sight" for you to receive the signal because the curve of the planet blocks the signal. The waves will travel forever just like all other electromagnetic waves if they are not blocked. In outer space, line of sight is forever. <br>------------------------<br><br>When the crew goes into free fall off of a cliff in the USS Franklin, they are shown to be restrained from falling forward by their seat restraints. However, this would only occur if the ship were decelerating. In fact, since the ship (and its occupants) are in free fall, they are accelerating at the same speed and the crew should be experiencing what we would call weightlessness. Of course, drag due to the atmosphere could create a differential in acceleration between the ship and the crew, but not to the dramatic extent shown. <br>------------------------<br><br>While it seems convenient that the Franklin worked so well for the crew of the Enterprise when the original crew was unable to repair it, there are a few things to take into consideration.<br><br>When the crew of the Franklin gave up attempting to repair the ship they instead began to use the nebula and the drones to lure and attack nearby ships. If Jaylah and the aliens she saved Scotty from are anything to go by, they've been doing this for a while to a large variety of ships.<br><br>We don't actually know how old Jaylah was when she found herself alone on the planet, nor how old she is now. It is entirely possible that, at the time her ship was destroyed, she was old enough to have been taught a few basics of engineering that, with time and a little natural genius not to mention extreme necessity, she was able to turn into a working a knowledge. While we don't know how long she's been there, it is obvious from her initial encounter with Scotty that she has spent at least a portion of her time scavenging parts from the ships Krall and his crew rain down on the planet and bringing them back to her "house" aka the Franklin. While it may seem surprising that she was able to repair the Franklin when its crew could not, she was only able to do so once Krall and his men, aka the Franklin's original crew, began to lure ships to the planet for her to salvage. By the time she had enough parts to fix the vessel it is safe to assume that they had completely abandoned all thought of returning to their original ship and heading home.<br><br>It is unclear exactly how much time the crew of the Enterprise spends on the planet, but at least one full day passes, the majority of which Scotty spends on the Franklin. Considering that Jaylah has spent a considerable number of years patching up the systems on the Franklin with whatever salvage she can find, and also taking into consideration Scotty's well-established genius, it is not entirely surprising that he was able to take it the last leg and repair it completely. <br>------------------------<br><br>The movie takes place inside a nebula, and we are indeed shown a nebula: a huge gas cloud. The characters even refer to the density of gas as they move through it. It also has some rocks and debris in it, but Star Trek nebulae often have rocks and debris in them. (Of course in real life, nebulae and asteroid fields would be indistinguishable from vacuum as far as a tiny starship is concerned.) <br>------------------------<br><br>When the Enterprise's deflector array is damaged, Kirk orders the ship to go to warp to escape the danger. According to Star Trek technology, starships can't go to warp without a deflector dish or they risk extreme damage from hitting particles at warp speed (the deflector, as it implies, deflects them). Given that the ship was in the process of being ripped into tiny pieces already, Kirk took a gamble. <br>------------------------<br><br>The ship suffers damage and cracks into several pieces, without losing gravity or power. These very important functions are presumably designed to work properly despite damage to the ship. The movie establishes that the ship's actually designed to separate into two pieces and continue to operate normally. <br>------------------------<br><br>The amount on ships and soldiers that the enemy has in it's swarm changes dramatically during the final battle. From a few thousand to tens/hundreds of thousands when they are attacking the station.However, previously in the film it is stated that the planet has deep and large underground caverns so it is entirely possible that there were more ships underground.<br><br>Also, the amount of soldiers that would be needed to pilot all the ships would be huge as it was shown that they contain at least 1 soldier in each ship. But, when they were watching the video logs near the end of the film, Idris' character clearly states that they found drones. It is quite possible that the bulk of the enemy fleet is made up of drones and controlled by the hive mind that the music disrupts. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Kirk takes a seat in the USS Franklin, he buckles up with old fashioned hip seat belts. In the next shot he suddenly has the newer shoulder chain-like seat belts The shoulder belts were there the whole time, he simply hadn't put them on yet; they cut away to other characters as Kirk put the shoulder belts on. <br>------------------------<br><br>When the saucer section of the Enterprise crashes on Altamid, it stays relatively intact. An object of that size however that enters the atmosphere of an M-class planet with shields and stabilizers down (meaning in an non-braked fashion) should burn up - at least much more than depicted - due to atmospheric friction. Even if it wouldn't, a structure that massive would undergo major disintegration on impact due to the negative acceleration. In any case such an impact would result in a great deal of ground displacement and therefore a big crater. <br>------------------------<br><br>The number of the fighters in Krall's swarm varies immensely: the docking spires visible inside Krall's base only appear to be able hold maybe a few hundred ships. The swarm forming above the base shortly before the final battle already is made up from a few thousand ships, while in the final battle itself, there are several tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands. Krall's base is also nowhere large enough to offer space for all the pilots of the swarm ships, which are shown to be manned by at least one soldier each. <br>------------------------<br><br>NX class USS Franklin was referred to as the first Warp 4 vessel, even though the earlier USS Enterprise NX-01 was the first Warp 5 vessel.Per Dylan Highsmith - writer on ST: Beyond"If you want the official explanation on the Franklin and it's warp factor: it was a M.A.C.O. ship (or a United Earth Starfleet ship that housed M.A.C.O. personnel at times) that predates the NX-01.When the UFP Starfleet is formed, M.A.C.O. was disbanded and the ship was reclassified as a Starfleet ship [with the USS identifier]. The ship is then "lost" in the early 2160's.It was important to everyone that the ship, like Edison, predate the Federation; that thematically, the ship mirrored an earlier time in history and served as a bridge in design between then and the NX-01.Doug [Jung] and Simon [Pegg] may have worked up something [on an official launch date], but if they did it never made it to script or screen.Either way it predates the NX-01, and was reclassified after the UFP is formed." <br>------------------------<br><br>Ignoring the fact that the USS Franklin somehow landed on the planet intact, it is never explained how the young Jayla was able to rebuild or repair the ship to the extent she did. It is also not explained, that if Jayla was able to do it, how come the original crew, with all their 1st hand knowledge and experience, were also not able to do it. Krall spent decades on the planet, trying to get off, but it seems he had a perfectly suitable ship the entire time, and Jayla (with no experience working on ships such as the Franklin, was able to repair it. <br>------------------------<br><br>When the Enterprise is being attacked and starts to roll in space, the crew (again) starts running along the side walls of the deck and back again. It's already been established that artificial gravity comes from "grav-plates" installed under the walking area/deck floor. These grav-plates can be adjusted to increase or decrease the amount of gravity so if the ship rolls you stay where you are. If artificial gravity loses power, you float. <br>------------------------<br><br>
