Nel 1633 due giovani gesuiti, Padre Rodrigues e Padre Garupe, rifiutano di credere alla notizia che il loro maestro spirituale, Padre Ferreira, partito per il Giappone con la missione di convertirne gli abitanti al cristianesimo, abbia commesso apostasia, ovvero abbia rinnegato la propria fede abbandonandola in modo definitivo. I due decidono dunque di partire per l'Estremo Oriente, pur sapendo che in Giappone i cristiani sono ferocemente perseguitati e chiunque possieda anche solo un simbolo della fede di importazione viene sottoposto alle più crudeli torture. Una volta arrivati troveranno come improbabile guida il contadino Kichijiro, un ubriacone che ha ripetutamente tradito i cristiani, pur avendo abbracciato il loro credo.

In the scene where Rodrigues and his Translator meet Garupe on the beach, Just after Garupe jumps into the ocean and starts to swim, The Translator is saying dialogue but his lips are not moving for most of the spoken line, and what is spoken does not match his lip movements. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Rodrigues, Garupe, and Kichijuro first arrive in Japan, they swim to shore. In the next shot, as they walk through the cave on the shore, they are completely dry. <br>------------------------<br><br>At 2:08, when Ferreira is talking to Rodrigues, the left side of his face is in the sun. With the sun on his left he turns his head to the right, where he points to the sun and stares right into the sun for seconds, without blinking his eyes. <br>------------------------<br><br>At 1:15:38, when Rodrigues talks to Monica about what awaits the faithful in Paradise, she is looking directly at him.
