Nel 1967 a Detroit, in piena epoca delle battaglie per i diritti civili degli afroamericani, in un ghetto della città una notte scoppia la rivolta a seguito di una retata della polizia in un club, dove si vendevano alcolici senza permesso. Il giorno dopo, con l'arrivo delle forze di polizia speciali del governatore, un ragazzo di colore viene ucciso con un colpo alle spalle dal poliziotto bianco Krauss, mentre fuggiva dopo un furto in un supermarket. <br>Larry è un ragazzo afroamericano che sogna di sfondare nel mondo della musica pop. Lui e il suo gruppo hanno in programma un'importante esibizione a teatro davanti a un vasto pubblico, ma l'evento va in fumo a causa degli scontri in strada e del conseguente sgombro del locale. Il gruppo di cantanti si allontanta, ma a causa degli scontri e del coprifuoco inmposto, si separa; Larry e suo fratello minore si rifugiano per la notte al Motel Algiers, dove fanno conoscenza di due ragazze bianche, che già alloggiavano nella struttura. <br>Nel frattempo, poco lontano, la polizia di ronda chiede informazioni sulla situazione locale a Melvin Dismukes, afroamericano assunto come guardia giurata presso un esercizio commerciale. Questi collabora con le forze di polizia nella repressione delle sommosse, ma allo stesso tempo cerca di limitare le tensioni evitando che un giovane venga perquisito ed arrestato. Dismukes cerca un approccio amichevole con le forze di polizia, offrendo caffé ai militari della guardia nazionale di ronda. Dei colpi di pistola fanno però allarmare i militari, che individuatane la provenienza, si dirigono verso il Motel Algiers. Infatti è da qui che uno dei vari ospiti, amico delle due ragazze, e alla presenza di loro, di Larry, del fratello e di altri ospiti, ha esploso dei colpi in direzione della pattuglia con una pistola scacciacani. <br>In seguito alla minaccia avvertita i militari, affiancati dalla Polizia di Stato e dalla pattuglia di polizia locale comandata da Krauss, irrompe nella struttura per scoprire chi abbia esploso i colpi. Durante l'irruzione viene ucciso subito, mentre cercava di fuggire, il responsabile dell'esplosione dei colpi. Gli altri ospiti dell'albergo, timorosi di essere malmenati o uccisi a loro volta, non indicano il responsabile. Benché Dismukes cerchi di allentare la tensione, Krauss e i colleghi mostrano ferocia, picchiando e insultando i sospettati e minacciando i presenti di morte, incluse le due ragazze, giudicandole ree del tradimento della razza di appartenenza. Alcuni dei sospetti vengono prelevati e portati in stanze chiuse, dove viene esploso un colpo, per fare credere agli altri fermati che la persona è stata eliminata, allo scopo di intimidirli e farli confessare. <br>Tuttavia la situazione non trova la soluzione auspicata da Krauss, che non individua né il responsabile né l'arma da cui sono stati esplosi i colpi. Anzi, viste le modalità di gestione dell'operazione, sia la polizia di Stato che i militari abbandonano il luogo, lasciando soli gli agenti della polizia municipale. Krauss comunque continua a procedere, affidando al suo collega più giovane il compito di "freddare" l'ultimo sospettato. Il poliziotto però non aveva capito la tattica di Krauss e uccide davvero il ragazzo; Krauss, preso dal panico, decide di chiudere l'azione e andarsene via, sincerandosi però che nessuno dei testimoni ancora presenti possa raccontare quanto avvenuto. Solo il fratello di Larry non comprende e si piega alle minacce, venendo ucciso a sangue freddo. <br>Tempo dopo Larry, dopo essere stato ricoverato in ospedale, parteciperà al processo che viene intentato contro Krauss, i due suoi colleghi e Dismukes, che però vede l'assoluzione degli imputati. Larry è profondamente cambiato e abbandona la band, anche se finalmente prossima al successo, e decide di dimenticare e di cambiare vita, cantando in una parrocchia del quartiere per continuare a sopravvivere.

In one of the interrogation rooms, there is a grounded outlet. Outlets weren't grounded in 1967. However The N.E.C. first mentions grounding receptacles in 1959. Grounding receptacles were required in new work in the 1968 code. <br>------------------------<br><br>The haircuts worn by many of the police officers were not only against regulations for the time (1967), they would have attracted unwanted attention from the public for being "too long." <br>------------------------<br><br>One of the wall lights in a scene has a fluorescent bulb. These were not invented until the 1990s and not widely used until the 2000s. <br>------------------------<br><br>The phones in the motel have flexible cords which were not available until the 1970's, well after the 1967 setting of the film. <br>------------------------<br><br>The first paddy wagon is seen picking up the rioters/looters, loading them up, and taking off. A second later the same paddy wagon pulled back up empty, to reload. Both paddy wagons have the same license plate, IJ062. <br>------------------------<br><br>The blood over Julie's eye changes slightly from one scene to the next. Most of the time, she has the same blood smear, but in one scene, the blood is on her eyelid when it isn't in the rest of the scenes. <br>------------------------<br><br>The Algiers Motel is depicted as being across a wooded city block, on a parallel street, to the Great Lakes Mutual Insurance building being guarded by police and the National Guard, and that the troops and police could see the motel and the windows of the Annex house straight on, because the motel faced the front of that building. However, the Great Lakes building is actually on the same side of the same street, Woodward Ave, as the location of the Algiers, and right next door. The building does not face the Algiers, and people in front of the building would not have been able to see the front of the motel or the Annex house, at least not at the clear angle depicted in the film, nor would anyone in the Annex house have been able to see the front of the Great Lakes building in order to play at "shooting" at them. <br>------------------------<br><br>In one scene there is a marked Michigan State Police vehicle leaving the scene with its single overhead beacon illuminated. The beacon is blue. In reality the Michigan State Police have always used a single RED beacon. As of 2018 they still do. <br>------------------------<br><br>The film is set in 1967. The Dramatics sing a line from 'What You See is What You Get' which didn't come out until 1971. <br>------------------------<br><br>When protesters are seen running down 12th Street, you can see mobile phone panels and microwave dishes. These were not out in 1967. <br>------------------------<br><br>On the chalkboard map in the police station, Livernois Ave. was misspelled as Livenois. <br>------------------------<br><br>There is a shot in he first half of the movie where the back of a parked Volkswagen Beetle fills most of the frame for a few seconds. The rear deck lid on the VW has four large vertical cooling vent slots, a design that was not introduced until 1972. <br>------------------------<br><br>In a hotel room, one of the guest telephones had a modular connector on the telephone handset, rather than being hard-wired to the telephone base. This was not common until many years later. <br>------------------------<br><br>The telephones in the hotel rooms and elsewhere have RJ (Registered Jack) style connectors. These style jacks were not introduced until the mid 1970s nationwide, but were present in Detroit as early as 1961. <br>------------------------<br><br>At about the 14:00 mark, a protester standing next to a wall is seen being beaten by a police officer with a night stick. As the officer hits him, you can see the night stick flexing as he swings. This would indicate that it is made out of rubber, and not from wood. <br>------------------------<br><br>
