9 si svolge in un futuro lontano (caratterizzato però in modo molto suggestivo da una tecnologia che ricorda l'industria bellica anni 40) in cui nessuna forma di vita esiste più sulla terra in seguito alla battaglia apocalittica tra macchine ed esseri umani. Una bambola di pezza si risveglia in un laboratorio e subito scopre che esistono suoi simili che vivono nascosti poco lontano. Le bambole hanno diversi caratteri e i loro nomi sono i numeri che hanno segnati sulla loro schiena. Il gruppo è composto da 1 (Christopher Plummer), il capo autoimposto del gruppo, veterano di guerra dai modi prepotenti; 2 (Martin Landau), un vecchio inventore; 5 (John C. Reilly), un meccanico con un occhio solo; 6 (Crispin Glover), un oracolo che dipinge all'infinito lo stesso simbolo; 7 (Jennifer Connelly), una guerriera valorosa e 8 (Fred Tatasciore), un guerriero molto grosso che, a differenza delle altre bambole, ha il numero indicato sulla spalla anziché sulla schiena. Nel gruppo compaiono anche due bambole gemelle, 3 e 4, abili a catalogare ogni cosa e che indossano sempre un cappuccio. L'intraprendenza di 9 e la tenacia di 7 riusciranno a far superare al gruppo le limitazioni di 1, a scoprire i segreti del passato e le dinamiche del nuovo mondo in modo da portare la storia su altri binari. Nel film vi sono varie situazioni molto simili all'omonimo cortometraggio, dal quale il film prende spunto.

<br>Continuity<br>_________<br>Once 2 places the voice box into 9, the zipper remains open. However, in the next shot, 9's zipper is closed. The following shot has the zipper open again. 9 is later shown zipping his zipper closed.<br><br>--------<br>When 9 meets the twins, they open his zipper. During this scene, several close-ups show 9 with the zipper closed and open again without anyone closing or opening it.<br><br>--------<br>When the Seamstress is sewing 1, he falls and the coin falls off his hat. However, in the full shot, 1's coin is back on his hat.<br><br>--------<br>When 5's map blows away, it gets caught on a piece of wood, but then blows away further when 5 and 9 approach it. However, when 5 and 9 are in the cave, 7 knows that they are in there because she sees the map caught on the piece of wood.<br><br>--------<br><br><br>Plot holes<br>_________<br>Before the Seamstress is attacking, there was a quick shot of 8.
