Nella provincia dell'Ohio la giovane Cassie ha vissuto le quattro "onde" di una devastante invasione aliena, che hanno ridotto quel che resta dell'umanità in una comunità impaurita e priva di una guida. Il presagio che la quinta onda sia quella definitiva si accompagna alla sensazione che gli alieni siano indistinguibili dagli umani.  In Sils Maria di Olivier Assayas, tra le molte scene memorabili, ve n'è una in cui i personaggi di Juliette Binoche e Kristen Stewart guardano un ridicolo blockbuster di fantascienza interpretato dal personaggio di Chloe Moretz, starlette in ascesa. La quinta onda, senza volerlo, assomiglia terribilmente a quel film nel film, pur sostituendo una comicità involontaria all'evidente esagerazione della parodia. Una chiave di Sils Maria era rappresentata dallo scambio di identità tra le attrici e tra i loro personaggi: fenomeno che paradossalmente sembra trovare riscontro qui, dove è la Moretz a impersonare un'eroina Young Adult alle prese con una storia d'amore impossibile e tormentata, del tutto simile a quella della Stewart di Twilight.  La prima "storia importante" sconvolge la realtà e il mondo di Cassie, lasciandola dilaniata dai dubbi di fronte alla strada da prendere, tra giusto e sbagliato, tra ciò che è bene e ciò che è male. Ma se la riscrittura Young Adult dell'horror classico poteva risultare goffa o semplicistica ma conquistava un suo pubblico, la rivisitazione della sindrome di invasione aliena con inevitabile futuro distopico non funziona a nessun livello. La storia d'amore procede per forzature e fatica a coinvolgere, il tema sci-fi fallisce sul piano tecnologico - assenti o puerili gli effetti speciali - e su quello narrativo - tutto è risaputo e stancamente sintetizzato per le masse - i capelli di Cassie sembrano sempre freschi di shampoo, anche dopo giorni di vita nelle terre selvagge.  La visione realmente distopica del mondo che verrà è quella di un futuro in cui film come La quinta onda possano divenire la norma. Un universo in cui il cinema sia solo passatempo e lo stereotipo un modo di accettare con semplicità un'approssimazione della realtà, senza guardare alla verosimiglianza. In cui approfondire non sia più necessario e l'esperienza percettiva sia solo un bignami, composto da ricordi confusi di ciò che è stato. In un certo senso La quinta onda sembra il risultato di una civiltà sconfitta e dominata dagli ultracorpi, che ha accettato con rassegnazione il suo destino de-evolutivo.

After Cassie fires the last shot from the Colt Model 1911 handgun, clicks are heard as if she had pulled the trigger several times. On that gun, after the last shot is fired, the slide locks back blocking the hammer. Pulling the trigger at that point does nothing, so a click could not be heard. Additionally, the 1911 is a single-action gun for the first shot that unlike a double action gun requires it to either fire a round or to be manually cocked for a trigger pull to drop the hammer. <br>------------------------<br><br>Evan sees Cassie cut off her old bandage, and then helps her with the new bandage. He asks her if she has a pair of scissors, despite seeing her use a pair just moments earlier. <br>------------------------<br><br>Cassie is wearing Converse at the beginning of the movie. However, once she enters the gas station. She is wearing a different pair of shoes. <br>------------------------<br><br>The .45 that Cassie's father gives her at the camp only has 1 ammo clip, and he isn't seen giving her any more ammo. After she fires the .45 while running on the freeway, we hear an audible "click", signifying that the clip has been emptied and she's clearly out of ammo. After she finds her gun at Evan's house, she pulls the clip from it and a fully loaded clip falls from it. <br>------------------------<br><br>Cassie packs her bag before leaving home, looking at her phone with its polka dot cover, before putting it into her bag. Brother Sam appears in the doorway and the phone is now back on the bed. <br>------------------------<br><br>Around 54 Minutes into the movie; Cassie falls over a tripwire setting off an alarm. In the next shot the wire is still there. Evan comes running after her and walks 'through' the same wire without jumping or evasive action. <br>------------------------<br><br>While running through the woods Cassie looses her brothers teddy bear. But when she is in a sleeping bag, the teddy bear is with her. <br>------------------------<br><br>When the tsunamis are referred to as hitting coastal cities, footage of Tower Bridge in London and Siam Securities in Bangkok(one presumes) being wiped out. Bangkok and London are not coastal cities. However, they are low elevation cities, and London has been flooded several times in the past prior to the construction of the Thames Barrier. <br>------------------------<br><br>The branch of the military represented in the movie are purported to be the U.S. Army, but the style of camouflage uniforms worn by the Army in the film are actually worn specifically and only by the U.S. Marines. <br>------------------------<br><br>The American Flag patches that the Soldiers are wearing on their arms are backwards. The Field of stars always faces the front. <br>------------------------<br><br>The character killed by Cassie at the beginning of the movie is listed in the cast as "Man with crucifix" and later in the movie, Evan references the "crucifix". But the man is wearing a plain metal cross. (A crucifix is a cross with the figure of Christ attached.) <br>------------------------<br><br>Cassie states that there are 300 billion birds on Earth, 75 for every human. There are about 7 billion humans on earth as of 2016. 75 birds for every human would actually mean there are 525 billion total birds.However, this could be because Cassie is referring to the estimated humans ''left'' on Earth after the 2 initial waves (The power outage and then the natural disasters - Earthquake and Tsunami). <br>------------------------<br><br>Evan Walker said he was offered scholarship from Kent State University to study Mechanical Engineering. Kent State Unviersity doesn't have Engineering School. <br>------------------------<br><br>When the squad of kids are sent out at night to kill "Others", they wear black uniforms and move stealthily. But they all have bright lights on their helmets, making them easy targets. <br>------------------------<br><br>Although it may appear, after giving Cassie a lesson in disarming an assailant, Evan returns the .45 clip without returning the loose, unchambered shell. In fact, his hands appear in a normal position when placing a round back in the clip. <br>------------------------<br><br>Inside a building in the refugee camp Colonel Vosch is informing the adults that 'the others' can transform into humans and so it could be a possibility that 'the others' could be among them without anyone noticing. Cassie was still outside when this information was given, so there is no way she could have known this. Yet later she writes in her diary how you can't trust nobody cause 'the others' look like us. <br>------------------------<br><br>Cassie has no idea Ben Parrish is alive, yet he gets off the same bus as Cassie's brother, Sam, when they are unloaded at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. <br>------------------------<br><br>
