La visita dell'imperatore Tiberio a Gerusalemme è alle porte e Ponzio Pilato ordina al tribuno militare Clavio di accertarsi che quel tale Yeshua che fa proseliti, spacciandosi per un re, sia messo a morte e che il suo cadavere sia sorvegliato per mettere a tacere le assurde voci di una sua possibile resurrezione. Ma il cadavere sparisce e Clavio avvia un'indagine che mette progressivamente in dubbio le sue certezze di scettico e si fa ad un certo punto ricerca di altro genere, interrogativo che gli cambia la vita.  L'idea di approcciare il mistero della resurrezione di Cristo come un'indagine poliziesca non è nuova, a metà degli anni Ottanta Damiano Damiani ci aveva costruito L'inchiesta, da un'idea (geniale, al solito) di Ennio Flaiano, e la letteratura sull'argomento che coniuga saggismo e narrativa non ha mai smesso di esistere. Le cose non cominciano però nel migliore dei modi quando il film di Kevin Reynolds si apre su un Joseph Fiennes bruciato dal sole e scortato da una musica dalle sonorità western, perché è subito chiaro che gli strumenti del cinema potrebbe venire qui impiegati in una maniera che serve più lo spettacolo che altro. E così è, sempre più, man mano che assistiamo alle magiche apparizioni e alla sparizioni di Gesù, quasi fossimo in un film di Méliès: un espediente che nuoce al film anche sul piano tematico, sostituendo il salto nel buio di Clavio con il deus ex machina dell'artificio tecnico. Se, infatti, nel film di Damiani, l'immagine corporea di Cristo non appariva mai, ribadendo con la sua assenza la permanenza di un mistero che dura a tutt'oggi, e permettendo che i lebbrosi scambiassero l'inquirente per Cristo stesso, il film di Reynolds gioca con carte più scoperte e modi ben più banali, riducendo lo scettico Clavio ad un ultimo fra gli ultimi e dunque ad una figura a suo modo cristologica, ma anche al beneficiario finale del tocco di incoraggiamento sulla spalla che il maori Cliff Curtis elargisce ai suoi ilari discepoli e della sua capacità di leggere nella mente.  Fino a dove l'inquisizione è faccenda storica e garbuglio politico, il film riscuote un certo tipo di interesse e, nonostante qualche scenografia troppo fasulla e qualche inutile bozzetto (il governatore Pilato che si lava le mani), ci accodiamo al cavallo di Clavio/Fiennes e lo seguiamo fino a che l'equilibrio tra la presenza del tribuno romano, frutto d'invenzione, e il racconto delle Scritture regge. La seconda parte, però, inaugura l'uso più strumentale e inverosimile della narrazione evangelica per raccontare la scelta di Clavio, mescolando generi e toni e perdendo in qualità e serietà.

Stirrups were not invented until well over 50 years later. <br>------------------------<br><br>On their journey to Galilee Peter approaches Clavius at camp during the night bringing him water. Clavius surprised by an approaching figure in the dark lashes out with his sword giving Peter a superficial cut on his right shin. Peter acts very pagan screaming at Clavius and spitefully pours out the water wasting it on the desert ground so he won't get a drop. Not exactly in keeping with the portrait of a repentant and contrite Peter who is growing into a holy man and leader of men. <br>------------------------<br><br>Under duress from the Sanhedrin, Pilate finally orders Clavius to have just two of his soldiers guard Jesus' tomb. Whether one of Pilate's auxiliary units or the Sanhedrin's temple guard or some mixture thereof were assigned to guard the tomb, known historical Roman and Judean practices dictate that the entire detail had at least fifteen or sixteen troops, allowing them to set up several shifts so that they could take turns guarding the tomb four or five at a time while their comrades slept. <br>------------------------<br><br>Mary Magdalene is portrayed as a prostitute possibly still active in her profession and is arrested for questioning in the investigation as she's entering a tavern known to be a place for soliciting potential customers. Both her identification with the woman caught in adultery and as a prostitute in general are based on medieval legends which have neither any canonical nor historical foundation; the New Testament indicates only that she was one of Jesus' followers because he had exorcised a number of evil spirits from her. <br>------------------------<br><br>Clavius ordering his soldier to run his spear into Jesus' side is presented as a kind of mercy killing in preference to the orders he has to break the crucified criminals' legs to hasten their deaths. Historically, Romans never finished off crucifixion victims by spearing them this way, and canonically, the New Testament indicates Jesus had already been dead for a while and the soldier was merely checking to make sure he had indeed died, not killing him. <br>------------------------<br><br>Clavius finds the burial linen in the tomb with the photographic negative reproduction of the image from the Shroud of Turin. While the Shroud of Turin may or may not contain the bloody imprint of Jesus' face, operating under the assumption that it does, the reproduction of this imprint on the burial linen ought to contain the positive image rather than the photo negative from which numerous illustrators derive what they believe to be the appearance of Jesus' face. <br>------------------------<br><br>The movie portrays Pilate and Clavius as being concerned about an upcoming visit from the Emperor. Historically, the Emperor Tiberius who was in power at the time is known to have been dwelling on the island of Capri near Italy, which he refused to leave for very long even to return to his rightful dwelling in Rome. In any event, he certainly never paid any visits to any province of his empire so distant as Pontius Pilate's district in Judea. <br>------------------------<br><br>After the earthquake at the beginning, Lucius said as an explanation that Poseidon was unhappy. But Poseidon is a greek god, the character should have mentioned instead Neptune, the roman counterpart of Poseidon. <br>------------------------<br><br>While the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ , the soldier told Clavius that Jesus died only in 6 hours actually in their time they had sand glass clocks but not measured in hours. <br>------------------------<br><br>Most crucifixes show Christ's hands pierced by the nails at the palms. The movie shows his arms pierced just above the wrists. Also those who have received the "stigmata" such as St. Francis of Assisi also show the wounds at the palms. However, the website www.catholiceducation.org states that the common Roman practice was to nail the condemned at the wrists with the arms supported by ropes. Accordingly, the movie depiction is likely correct. <br>------------------------<br><br>Agaves and Opuntias are from the Madrean Region and could not have appeared in the Holy Land until the discovery of Americas. Yet they appear in the film. <br>------------------------<br><br>
