Maine. In un grave incidente d'auto perde la vita il marito della psicologa dell'infanzia Mary Portman e rimane paralizzato il di lei figlioccio Stephen. Mary sceglie di occuparsi di Stephen e di proseguire con la propria professione, isolandosi sempre più dal mondo esterno. Si interessa particolarmente al caso di un paziente, Tom, ragazzino dotato e dall'infanzia difficile. Tom si presenta a casa di Mary ma poi scompare nel nulla. Da quel giorno la dottoressa è tormentata dagli incubi e dalle visioni.  In una manifestazione analoga ai Razzie Awards, gli oscar per i peggiori film dell'anno, fu intitolato all'attore canadese Oliver Platt un premio ironico sul fatto di accettare acriticamente ogni ruolo, dal nome "Un altro filmaccio e di te non ne vogliamo più sapere". Nel cast di Shut in c'è Oliver Platt. Ma forse neppure lui è stato così convinto da principio sullo script di Christina Hodson. Che molto evidentemente delega le sue fortune a un unico colpo di scena e cerca il modo di arrivare a quel punto con quasi un'ora di crescendo emotivo. Quest'ultimo per il regista Farren Blackburn si traduce in un continuo posticipo dell'azione, in cui sostanzialmente non succede nulla a livello narrativo: solo qualche sporadico spavento, offerto attraverso un'unica soluzione, quella dell'ingresso in scena improvviso di un personaggio, accompagnato da musica assordante. Dopo una dozzina di volte, questo escamotage produce solo tedio. Quando poi il sospirato colpo di scena si manifesta, previsto anche dallo spettatore più a digiuno di thriller, la noia viene rimpiazzata dal comico involontario. Blackburn e Hodson non si fanno alcun problema nel ricorrere direttamente al copione di Shining di Stanley Kubrick: la neve che complica le cose ma aiuta a confondere le tracce, l'elemento estraneo che accorre in soccorso per essere sacrificato, i rapporti malati in seno a un nucleo familiare che si è staccato dalla società e dalla realtà. Peccato che tutti abbiano visto il film di Kubrick e nessuno interpreti quel che vede come un "omaggio", anziché un saccheggio. Una produzione evidentemente sciatta, sub-televisiva (Blackburn da lì proviene e lì ritornerà), in cui stupisce la presenza di un'attrice del potenziale di Naomi Watts. A rischio di typecasting il bambino di Room Jacob Tremblay.

The first time the mother puts the electrodes on the son his shirt is wide open on his chest from the above angle. Then during the switch to the side angle his shirt appears much less open, and then back to the above shot with it opened wide. <br>------------------------<br><br>In the last scene of the movie, the mother is speaking to the little boy who is in the right side of the back seat, presumably so she/we can see him and his drawing clearly. When they get out of the car he exits through the left side door. Not an error, but unusual that he wouldn't get out on the right...they are making the shot easier. <br>------------------------<br><br>A child is declared missing after somehow finding his way to his former psychologist's home during freezing winter weather. Not only aren't police overly concerned about the matter, when local news reports are shown, this is somehow not the major story. <br>------------------------<br><br>Dr. Wilson calls the police while driving to Mary's (the protagonist) home. EVen though it shown to have taken him several hours to get there, the police are not only nowhere in sight, they haven't even been to her house. Despite this, the doctor doesn't attempt to call them again. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Mary and Tom are on the boat dock, despite the weather being well below freezing, you can't see their breath. <br>------------------------<br><br>
