Lara Croft è una ragazza indipendente e sicura di sé, orfana del padre scomparso anni prima. Lara è destinata ad ereditare una holding multinazionale, ma si rifiuta di prenderne possesso, ritenendo suo padre ancora vivo. La tutrice Ana e il notaio le consegnano un rompicapo che contiene al suo interno una chiave. <br>La chiave apre una stanza segreta nascosta nel mausoleo familiare Croft, contenente cimeli e dati da avventuriero del padre di Lara, mai più tornato da una spedizione nel Mar del Diavolo al largo del Giappone: Lara decide di partire per cercarlo. Fatto scalo ad Hong Kong per trovare il proprietario della barca che condusse sette anni prima il padre sull'isola, Lara trova la barca capitanata da Lu Ren, figlio della persona che stava cercando; anch'egli non ha notizie di suo padre dalla stessa data e così, in cambio di una ricompensa e speranzoso di trovare suo padre, si unisce alla missione. Durante la traversata verso l'isola di Yamatai, una furibonda tempesta li fa naufragare sulle spiagge dell'isola. <br>Accolta malamente da Mathias, capo di una spedizione segreta paramilitare, Lara scopre che l'uomo è alla ricerca della tomba di Himiko, il monumento sotterraneo cercato dal padre di Lara, ma rivela anche di essere l'assassino dell'uomo. <br>Impossibilitata a chiedere aiuto e intrappolata sull'isola, Lara sfugge ai suoi rapitori e nella fuga incontra proprio suo padre, in realtà solo fintosi morto per depistare indisturbato le ricerche di Mathias: la società cui fa capo il team è alla ricerca dei segreti dell'isola, ritenuti fonte di poteri sovrannaturali, per fini malvagi. Mathias trova l'ingresso sotterraneo della "tomba di Himiko" grazie agli appunti del padre di Lara sottratti alla ragazza, che cattura i due Croft e li porta con sé all'avanscoperta. <br>Giunti, dopo aver superato trappole e meccanismi assassini di ogni genere, alla stanza finale (contenente il sepolcro di Himiko, storica regnante giapponese), lo scoperchiamento della salma della regina diffonde una malattia terribile che rende irrimediabilmente folli coloro che toccano il suo cadavere e alcuni militanti di Mathias vengono contagiati. Il padre di Lara, infettato a sua volta, si fa esplodere all'interno della tomba; la ragazza uccide Mathias e rimane intrappolata nelle macerie del mausoleo. Viene salvata, infine, da Lu Ren. <br>Di ritorno a Londra, Lara firma i documenti per l'eredità, ma viene raggirata dalla sua tutrice, in realtà un'agente della società mandante di Mathias: la ragazza decide così di prepararsi a una nuova avventura.

After Vogel killed one of the prisoners in the camp with his gun, he points it towards Lara. He then cocks the gun. This is purely for dramatic reason as the gun, being a semi-automatic, would already have been cocked after his shot at the prisoner. <br>------------------------<br><br>The position of Anna's arms varies when she is in the police station with Lara. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Lara takes the plunge over the falls and ends up on the beach there are no falls or river that also goes to the beach. We could call that that dry falls. <br>------------------------<br><br>Lara is on the Endurance sailing from Hong Kong to Japan, due north east. But when she bids goodnight to Lu Ren and heads to her cabin the ship can be seen sailing towards the setting sun in the west. <br>------------------------<br><br>At around 57 minutes, after Lara escapes Mathias (as the scene turns to night), there is a close up of a Bearded Dragon in a tree. This is a desert lizard native to Australia and could not survive the humidity of the island. <br>------------------------<br><br>Lara's father has been missing for 7 years. Yet when she finds his research cave the battery on the video camera is fully charged. <br>------------------------<br><br>When falling in the river Lara ends up on a rusty crashed airplane.The body work of that plane would had been made of aluminum, as iron is way too heavy. This would not result in a brown rust patine, as aluminum turns white when it corrodes. <br>------------------------<br><br>Lara takes many unnecessary risks in the final battle with Vogel. She approaches him from behind, and could easily have kicked him down the shaft that the makeshift bridge goes across. Instead, she jumps out onto the bridge, dangling off the side as the nearly falls into the pit, putting herself in a vulnerable position. She then takes the diseased finger and crams it down his throat, potentially risking getting herself infected. And on top of this, she kicks him after he's clearly infected, running the risks of infection herself once again. All of these risks could have been avoided if she'd simply surprise attacked Vogel and knocked him down the chasm. <br>------------------------<br><br>
