Francia, 1959. Lansquenet-sur-Tannes è un piccolo e idilliaco paesino i cui abitanti vivono all'insegna della tranquillité, ossia il quieto vivere: ognuno conosce il proprio posto nella società, senza distinzioni né eccezioni, e qualsiasi devianza dalla norma è guardata con sospetto e diffidenza. La vita scorre di giorno in giorno immutabile, scandita dalla messa domenicale in cui i sacri valori della tranquillité vengono ribaditi dai sermoni del giovane padre Henri, che tuttavia si limita ad adeguarsi ad un rituale che in realtà non condivide. Sindaco e custode morale di Lansquenet è il rigidissimo conte Paul de Reynaud, così ligio al proprio dovere di pastore della comunità da scrivere egli stesso i sermoni di padre Henri. <br>Un giorno, preannunciate da un irrequieto vento proveniente da Nord, due straniere arrivano a Lansquenet: si tratta della misteriosa quanto provetta pasticcera Vianne Rocher e di sua figlia, la piccola Anouk. Vianne apre in paese una cioccolateria nonostante sia appena iniziato il periodo di Quaresima; ben presto il locale, con i suoi profumi e colori, assume i connotati di una tentazione sempre più irresistibile per i repressi paesani, attirando molti clienti, tra cui Armande Voizin, anziana e burbera padrona di casa di Vianne, e poi Josephine Muscat, moglie del violento e alcolizzato barista Serge Muscat. <br>Armande e Josephine sono entrambe insofferenti al rigore ipocrita della tranquillité e cercano come possono di trovare un modo per liberarsi dall'oppressione. Armande è in aperto contrasto con la figlia Caroline, segretaria e fervente sostenitrice di Reynaud, a causa del proprio rifiuto di conformarsi ai dettami della comunità e frequenta costantemente la cioccolateria di Vianne nonostante sia affetta da diabete. Caroline, divisa tra l'imbarazzo e la preoccupazione nei confronti della madre, non permette al proprio figlio Luc di frequentare la nonna ed è iperprotettiva verso di lui, arrivando addirittura ad impedirgli di andare in bicicletta. Josephine, invece, donna trascurata e nevrotica a causa dei maltrattamenti di Serge, sfoga la propria frustrazione con atti di cleptomania, arrivando a rubare persino durante la messa. Sia Armande che Josephine ritroveranno la serenità grazie a Vianne, che aiuterà la prima a conciliarsi con Luc e darà lavoro e rifugio alla seconda quando Josephine troverà finalmente il coraggio di fuggire da Serge. <br>Reynaud, furibondo per gli stravolgimenti provocati da Vianne, ingaggia una vera e propria crociata contro la donna. Dapprima il conte cercherà di aizzare i paesani contro Vianne mettendo in giro maldicenze e con una serie di sermoni che un riluttante padre Henri sarà costretto a leggere durante la messa, poi cercherà di riabilitare Serge e salvare il suo matrimonio con Josephine; tutti i tentativi di Reynaud, tuttavia, falliranno a causa della sempre maggior insofferenza dei paesani alla tranquillité e di una Josephine ormai indipendente e libera dal controllo del marito. <br>Una nuova svolta si presenta quando una comunità di zingari che vive a bordo di chiatte spostandosi lungo la Tannes approda a Lansquenet. La reazione dei paesani è di immediata ostilità e Reynaud coglie l'occasione per riprendere il controllo della comunità proponendo il cosiddetto "Boicottaggio dell'Immoralità", ossia un'iniziativa per cui tutti i negozianti ed esercenti di Lansquenet rifiutano di servire gli stranieri. Soltanto Vianne si mantiene estranea alla cosa e si avvicina ai gitani; un'intesa immediata e particolare scatta con Roux, affascinante zingaro stranamente impermeabile al dono di Vianne di comprendere i gusti delle persone. Vianne, tuttavia, si ritrova isolata dalla comunità a causa della sua amicizia con gli zingari, al che Armande, per aiutarla a ritrovare fiducia in se stessa, le propone di organizzarle la festa per il suo settantesimo compleanno. Alla festa partecipano le poche persone rimaste amiche di Vianne, tra cui Roux e Josephine, e soprattutto Luc, che si presenta con un bel ritratto per la nonna realizzato da lui stesso. Armande, però, pagherà caro il prezzo dei bagordi; l'anziana donna, infatti, si spegne durante la notte nella propria poltrona e sarà Luc a ritrovarla la mattina dopo. <br>Nottetempo qualcuno incendia le chiatte degli zingari, fortunatamente senza causare vittime. Vianne, conscia che il responsabile è un paesano e sentendosi in colpa per la morte di Armande, conclude di non essere riuscita a cambiare le cose nella comunità e decide di lasciare Lansquenet. Anouk non vuole andarsene e tra lei e Vianne si scatena un litigio che culmina nella rottura dell'urna contenente le ceneri della madre di Vianne. L'evento è per Vianne un segnale: era stata proprio sua madre, una nomade di origine sudamericana, ad iniziarla all'arte del cioccolato e dei viaggi, e lo spargimento delle ceneri sul suolo di Lansquenet è per Vianne un messaggio che è giunto il tempo di restare. A riprova di ciò, Vianne trova nella cucina della cioccolateria i suoi amici paesani, a cui si è ora unita una Caroline che ha finalmente perdonato la madre e si è riconciliata con Luc, intenti a preparare i dolci per la festa di Pasqua, ormai imminente. Nel frattempo, Serge, reo confesso dell'incendio, viene cacciato da Lansquenet da Reynaud in persona, che finalmente è costretto a riconoscere il fallimento della sua crociata. <br>La notte tra sabato e la domenica di Pasqua, Reynaud, sentendosi ormai abbandonato da tutti, si intrufola nella cioccolateria per distruggere le creazioni di Vianne; tuttavia, ingerisce per sbaglio un pezzetto di cioccolata e il conte, debilitato dal digiuno quaresimale, cede finalmente alla tentazione e finisce per abbuffarsi con tutto ciò che trova in vetrina. Vianne e padre Henri lo trovano la mattina dopo: tra il conte e la pasticcera si stabilisce finalmente un mutuo rispetto, con il primo che accetta l'insensatezza delle proprie azioni e la seconda felice di essere riuscita ad aiutarlo a lasciarsi andare. Padre Henri, alla messa di Pasqua, pronuncerà un sermone totalmente improvvisato, ma così carico di passione da riuscire a spazzare via gli ultimi rimasugli della tranquillité da Lansquenet. Alla festa di Pasqua, i paesani sono finalmente liberi, allegri e felici e persino Reynaud, ormai sereno, prende parte alle celebrazioni, gustando i dolci proposti. <br>L'intera storia è raccontata da un'anziana narratrice che nelle ultime scene svela cosa accadde dopo ai protagonisti: Reynaud trovò finalmente il coraggio per chiedere un appuntamento a Caroline, per la quale aveva sempre avuto un debole, anche se passarono ben sei mesi prima che ciò accadesse; Josephine rilevò il locale di Serge e lo rinominò "Café Armande" in onore dell'anziana signora; Vianne scelse di stabilirsi definitivamente a Lansquenet; Roux, ripartito l'indomani dell'incendio, tornò a Lansquenet per restare con Vianne e Anouk; quanto alla narratrice, si scopre che essa non è altri che la stessa Anouk.

In one of the scenes where Vianne is getting the pot of hot chocolate to pour a cup for Armande, there is a 1990s-style heating device near where she got the pot. <br>------------------------<br><br>The movie is set in 1959, yet when Comte de Reynaud enters Caroline's office in the beginning of the film, a modern security motion sensor can be seen in the top right of the screen. <br>------------------------<br><br>At the Easter festival a bal folk dance tune is played (Scottish Morvandelle), but the sound is completely out of sync with the dancing couples in all scenes. <br>------------------------<br><br>In the scene where Vianne jumps off the dock into the lake, you can see Vianne jumping and Roux watching her from behind with a calm expression. When the camera switches to Roux's close-up, Roux's back is to the camera. He then turns around and looks shocked for a second, then says "Jesus..." and jumps in after her. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Roux enters Serge's shop at first with the little girl, it films her hair, which is neat, straight and glossy. Yet when Serge says he doesn't "serve animals", it films the girl again, and suddenly her hair is totally messed up and tangled. <br>------------------------<br><br>Throughout the movie, the shop door, broken by Serge and repaired by Roux, is in various states of repair that don't make chronological sense. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Vianne is packing and about to leave, a hanger is swinging behind her. Throughout the scene the speed of the hanger changes from slow to fast to slow again. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Vianne and Roux are in the river, the two change (between shots) from Vianne facing away from shore with Roux's arm across her chest to Vianne facing towards the shore with Roux's arm around her shoulders. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Roux offers Anouk a gift from the bucket, his hand alternates between being over and then under the handle. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Vianne and Anouk first meet Roux at the dock, it is an overcast day. Yet while Vianne and Anouk are shot in the "overcast" light, Roux is shot with a light on his left side, as if the sun was setting. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Vianne takes the newspaper down from the shop window on the day it opens, the shots from the inside show the window covered in dust and cobwebs, while from the outside the window is clean and shining. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Vianne is giving Josephine hot chocolate in the shop for the first time, the amount in Josephine's cup changes between shots. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Vianne jumps in the water, she has gray stockings or leggings on that are not there when she comes out of the river. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Roux enters the chocolate shop the first time, Vianne hands him a chocolate to try. As he is eating the first bite, the camera changes angles and we see that the chocolate has been completely eaten. <br>------------------------<br><br>Early in film when Vianne makes Amande her first cup of chocolate, she fills the cup only half full of chocolate. Then she adds the chili pepper and the whipped cream. When she places the cup of hot chocolate in front of Amande, the cup is very full. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Vianne and Anouk first come down to see the River People, we hear Roux playing a guitar, but can't actually see him. Then, when the two finally see Roux, he's sitting right ahead of them, in front of a white screen, where no one was sitting the shot before, playing a guitar. <br>------------------------<br><br>In the party scene on Roux's boat, when Josephine is dancing with one of the river people, the camera can be seen exiting the frame on the left. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Vianne is forcing Anouk to put her red cloak on towards the end of the film, there's a mirror on the wall next to the bed. A crew member is briefly visible in it. <br>------------------------<br><br>While Pere Henri is doing his gardening, the Comte De Reynaud suddenly speaks with an English accent. <br>------------------------<br><br>Several scenes have deciduous trees green with leaves, and snow and ice on the ground. Since it is the beginning of Lent, and thus early in the year, this is not possible in a temperate climate. <br>------------------------<br><br>At the end of the movie when Vianne pours them hot chocolate, Roux takes a cup and drinks. When we see them again, Vianne is handing him a new cup of chocolate and Roux takes a drink from that cup. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Vianne offers Comte Paul de Reynaud the glass of refreshment (after he has destroyed the window's display, and then awakens) the first glass she offers him is larger than the glass is moments later. <br>------------------------<br><br>
