Il film, ambientato nel 1713, tratta di Robert Roy MacGregor, un capo clan scozzese. <br>All'inizio del film Rob Roy recupera alcune mandrie di bestiame rubate al marchese Montrose. Successivamente Roy decide di chiedere un prestito di 1000 sterline al marchese per acquistare una mandria, con l'intenzione di rivenderla per trarne profitto, dando come garanzia i propri possedimenti: 300 acri di terra. Secondo l'accordo, il marchese riceverà 1/5 dei profitti delle vendite. Il contabile del marchese, Killearn, ordisce, però, un piano con il generale dell'esercito del suo padrone, il cinico e fatuo Archibald Cunningham, e dopo aver ingannato e ucciso un amico di Rob, i due riescono a rubare il denaro. <br>Rob, ritenuto responsabile, si reca dal marchese, il quale gli offre la possibilità di annullare il debito se testimonierà il falso contro il duca di Argyll, creduto un giacobita. Rob rifiuta l'offerta per salvare il suo onore e si sottrae all'arresto comandato dal marchese. Per ottenere vendetta Montrose manda il suo esercito comandato da Cunningham ai possedimenti dei McGregor e Cunningham, dopo aver fatto razzia del bestiame, violenta la moglie e brucia la casa. <br>Mary farà giurare al fratello minore di Rob di non raccontare nulla al marito dello stupro subito, perché vuole impedire a Cunnigham di riuscire nel suo piano, e cioè recare a Rob un'offesa tale da costringerlo ad uscire allo scoperto per vendicare l'onore della moglie. Betty, una serva messa incinta da Archibald e da lui abbandonata, si reca dalla moglie di Rob e le rivela il complotto. Killearn viene così rapito per firmare una testimonianza scritta del complotto, ma viene gravemente ferito con un'arma da taglio da Mary ed ucciso dal fratello di Rob. Betty si suicida, impiccandosi disperata, mentre Rob si rifugia sui monti dove però viene braccato. Nel tentativo di salvare lo stolto fratello minore, che spara ai soldati rivelando la loro presenza e, ferito a morte, gli rivela lo stupro della moglie, viene catturato e portato al cospetto di Montrose. <br>Poco prima di essere impiccato ad un ponte riesce a fuggire strangolando quasi Cunningham e torna a casa da Mary che nel frattempo ha ottenuto l'aiuto del duca di Argyll, contro il quale Rob aveva rifiutato di testimoniare. Rob chiede e ottiene un duello con Cunnigham, se vincerà avrà il condono del suo debito. Ferito e debilitato nel combattimento sembra impossibile che Rob possa salvarsi ma inginocchiato davanti a Cunningham, afferra la spada del nemico, lo colpisce uccidendolo e si ricongiunge alla sua famiglia.

Rob Roy died in 1734. <br>------------------------<br><br>The redcoats under Cunningham's command have socket bayonets. Correct bayonets for the period are plug types. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Killearn leads McDonald into the pub, an overhead fluorescent lamp can be seen. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Robert Roy MacGregor hides in the corpse of a highland cow, Montrose's man leading the chase says, "What a stench! Let's get downwind." To get away from an odor, a person needs to place himself upwind, not downwind. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Killearn takes from MacDonald the paper about the "new world," he crumples it into a ball. But when he later hands it to MacGregor, it's smooth and has clearly never been crumpled. <br>------------------------<br><br>In the final sword fight, Archie's blade is bent and straight in different shots. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Rob Roy jumps off the bridge, his hands are tied together, when he hits the water and jumps back up, they are untied, and when he comes back up again they are tied back together <br>------------------------<br><br>When Archie is chasing MacDonald through the woods on horseback, MacDonald's hair is tied back in some shots. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Mary goes to the edge of the water, just before the soldiers arrive, she ties her shawl into a knot around her shoulders. When she runs back to the house, her shawl is loose. <br>------------------------<br><br>Burning objects on lake shore appear, disappear, change location, and change size. <br>------------------------<br><br>In the final scene where Rob returns home, the sky is cloudy and it looks like it will rain. When the long shot showing the family and their home against the Highlands is shown and the credits begin to roll, the sky is sunny with white clouds, yet all of this is supposed to happened within five or ten minutes at the most. The sky would not have had time to clear up. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Archibald falls dead to the floor, his sword rests on his upper arm. In the next shot, MacGregor drops his sword and Archibald's sword is on the floor next to him. In the next shot, the sword is again on his arm. <br>------------------------<br><br>When MacDonald is thrown from his horse by a rope across the path, you can see the harness and line that pulls him backwards just before he gets to the rope. <br>------------------------<br><br>Throughout the film, which takes place in 1713, James Graham is referred to and addressed as the [4th] Marquess of Montrose. In reality, James Graham was elevated to become the [1st] Duke of Montrose in 1707. It follows that the scene where the Duke of Argyll "pulls rank" on him is incorrect, as the two would have been of equal standing at this point in time. <br>------------------------<br><br>The Duke of Argyll is depicted as a man in his sixties. At the time this film is set John Campbell, 2nd Duke of Argyll was in his early thirties. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Rob and his men are seen returning the cattle, one of the cows accidentally hooks its right horn under Liam Neeson's left arm for a second or two. He pulls away quickly and slaps the cow on the rump, but he is fortunate that he was not injured. This seems to have been an accidental incident, unplanned, which made it into the final cut of the film. <br>------------------------<br><br>A stunt double is visible when Rob Roy is riding the horse he steals from the soldier who killed Alasdair. Though seen from the distance is easy to notice that is not Liam Neeson who's riding the horse. <br>------------------------<br><br>After Archie steals the money at the highland meeting, Rob Roy addresses the Highlanders; as he holds his hands up, he has a modern adhesive bandage on his right hand. <br>------------------------<br><br>After Rob kills Archibald by slicing his shoulder there is no blood on his sword. <br>------------------------<br><br>When the MacGregors are watching the redcoats burn Rob's home (again), he signals for them to withdraw by means of a distinctive bird-call: that of a whippoorwill. There are no whippoorwills in Scotland. The bird is native to North America. <br>------------------------<br><br>
