La storia è imperniata su Thomas, uno scontroso ma molto affascinante fotografo londinese di moda. Egli non è solo un fatuo protagonista dell'ambiente ricco e raffinato della Swinging London anni sessanta, ma anche un artista attento al sociale: sta infatti realizzando un libro fotografico avente come soggetti persone disagiate dei quartieri londinesi, giovani hippy o clochard che dormono in ospizio. Arriva persino a passare una notte in dormitorio pur di avere immagini crude e drammatiche, e la mattina successiva sostiene un impegno fotografico in studio con una splendida modella (Verushka).<br>Thomas è però egocentrico e non soddisfatto completamente. Ha un buon lavoro e molto tempo libero, gira per Londra con una Rolls Royce decappottabile e non ha certo problemi con le donne, ma nonostante ciò l'insoddisfazione si insinua nella sua vita. La prova si ha quando è a pranzo con l'amico Ron (Peter Bowles) nel ristorante El Blason di Chelsea. All'improvviso Thomas esclama: "Non ne posso più di Londra questa settimana!". Alla richiesta di chiarimenti da parte di Ron, Thomas replica: "Perché non fa niente per me...".<br>È proprio cercando l'ispirazione per gli ultimi scatti da inserire nel libro che, dopo aver visitato un piccolo negozio di antiquariato che vorrebbe acquistare con un socio (Peter), in un parco periferico si imbatte in due amanti e scatta loro delle foto, cercando di non farsi notare e nascondendosi dietro agli alberi e ai cespugli. Ma la donna della coppia (Jane, Vanessa Redgrave) si accorge di quanto sta accadendo e, una volta raggiunto Thomas, gli chiede insistentemente il rullino. Al suo diniego, fugge, ma nel corso della stessa giornata si presenta allo studio fotografico del meravigliato Thomas, dove cerca a ogni costo di farsi consegnare la pellicola. Con uno stratagemma Thomas le consegna un rullino diverso da quello usato nel parco e poi, intrigato dal comportamento misterioso della donna, inizia ad indagare, sviluppando e ingrandendo (il cosiddetto Blow-Up) le fotografie. Una volta portata a termine l'operazione, Thomas si accorge di come le immagini rivelino un tentativo di assassinio, benché gli scatti non siano del tutto comprensibili.<br>Così il protagonista continua nella sua investigazione. Torna al parco dove ha scattato le foto e scopre il cadavere dell'amante della donna. Ma al suo ritorno allo studio fotografico non trova più né il negativo, né le stampe ingrandite; il materiale è stato presumibilmente rubato. Thomas si reca da Ron, a cui chiede di andare con lui al parco, ma l'amico non è più in grado di ragionare, sotto gli effetti della marijuana che viene fumata dai partecipanti ad una festa privata; qua trova la modella protagonista degli scatti fatti in studio al mattino. Lo stesso Thomas poi si unisce al festino, risvegliandosi stordito la mattina dopo. Tornato al parco, questa volta con la macchina fotografica per documentare quanto ha visto la notte precedente, non può che constatare che il cadavere è sparito.<br>Il finale è pessimistico, la verità resta sfuggente, l'arte deve arrendersi alla sua finzione. Nell'epilogo infatti si vede una partita di tennis 'giocata' da una compagnia di mimi senza palle né racchette, e un Thomas ormai persuaso di aver immaginato tutto: 'segue' con gli occhi la traiettoria dell'invisibile pallina e 'sente' il tipico rumore della palla percossa dalle inesistenti racchette.

When Thomas is driving along Stockwell Road towards Woolwich, he drives past the same red-painted building - Pride & Clarke (a contemporary motorcycle dealer) - several times. <br>------------------------<br><br>The print removed by Thomas from the darkroom ferrotype dryer is stiff and perfectly dry, however the print shown moments later in the following scene is limp and obviously still wet. <br>------------------------<br><br>In the park the lens protector is down on the grass between Thomas's feet. He then takes a long step to bend down and pick up the lens protector from a distance. <br>------------------------<br><br>In the scene where Thomas purchases the propeller he is shown displacing a few bust sculptures from an above shelf. The very next shot, they are back in perfect order. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Jane and Thomas are discussing the photographic film in Thomas's house, there is a pillow with the number three on it propped up vertically against the back of a couch. A little later, this pillow has moved to the top of the back of the couch at the point where the arm meets it and no one has touched it. <br>------------------------<br><br>The photographer's haircut is different at the Yardbirds concert. <br>------------------------<br><br>In the scene where Jane first confronts the photographer in the park and tries to stop him her hairstyle keeps changing from brushed straight back to hair parted. <br>------------------------<br><br>When Jane tries to sneak out of the photographer's home with the camera, her hairstyle radically changes from the way it was upstairs to a different style when he stops her. When they go back upstairs it's suddenly back to the old style. <br>------------------------<br><br>Reflection of bald man with glasses in the top right corner when Thomas is in the phone booth. <br>------------------------<br><br>Shadow of camera crew visible when the photographer is driving home from the factory. <br>------------------------<br><br>During the scene where Thomas is frolicking with the two girls on the purple paper backdrop in the studio, two crew members including a camera operator can be clearly seen just sitting there in the top right side of the frame. <br>------------------------<br><br>When the mimes stop Thomas in his car at the beginning of the film, the entire film crew is reflected on the side of it when we are given the shot from behind them. When it returns to the view from the passenger side we see that a single old man is walking by on the other side of the street. <br>------------------------<br><br>Just before the Telephone box goof, when the photographer gets out of his car and walks towards the phone box, for a split second a crew member's arm is visible behind the wall on the right of the shot. <br>------------------------<br><br>In the scene where Jane gives Thomas her phone number, there is a huge piece of coiled-up hair at the bottom of the screen. <br>------------------------<br><br>The hawthorn is in bloom in the park one day and entirely missing the following morning, though still in full leaf. It is clear that the second "day" was filmed in midsummer, some weeks after the first. <br>------------------------<br><br>
